It is almost unfair to limit today's Bad Spring Training Decision of the Day to "of the Day" status because this bit of lineup construction was a bad idea that nobody thought better of for several years, making this something of an evergreen Bad Spring Training Decision.  What poor idea is that exactly?  Oh, just batting Alfonso Soriano in the leadoff spot. Really?  Again with this? Yes, it seems now that Theo Epstein has left Boston, he somehow has forgotten all about the importance of on-base percentage.  Paging, Bill James.  Report to Wrigley Field, STAT! How little sense would such a batting order make?  Let us count the ways: Soriano is coming off a season in which he posted a .289 OBP. Soriano's career OBP is .323. Soriano has not boasted an OBP higher than .322 in the last three years. The highest OBP that Soriano has ever registered is .351. The last time Soriano hit leadoff, he had great speed.  He has stolen 16 total in the last three seasons. ...

Cubs 11, Rockies 4

Alfonso Soriano hit two home runs and a double to send Dale Sveum and the Chicago Cubs to an 11-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. It was Sveum's first victory since he was hired to manage the Cubs in November. Soriano led off the Cubs' four-run second inning with a drive that hit halfway up the scoreboard in left field. He led off the third with a double to...

Chicago Cubs Win World Series, Windy City Goes Wild in Commercial for MLB 12 'The Show' (Video)

We all remember the first time we led our favorite team to the championship in franchise mode of a sports video game. We imagined a city full of Sims-like people losing their marbles while our little pixelated figures piled on top of each other on a recreated infield. Well, at least that's what I did. In a commercial for MLB 12 The Show, the city of Chicago erupts with joy when...

Daily Facepalm 3.5.12 – Random state laws edition

This week in state laws Lots of discussion in the comments this morning about state liquor and marriage laws yesterday. Apparently WaLi tried to get drunk and marry his cousin yesterday, and needed to make sure what states he was allowed to do that in. Is there a Cubs game today? The Cubs play an A's split squad today at HoHoKam. Pat and Zonk have the call on WGN radio, and...

Report: Theo Epstein Wants to Limit Cubs' Partying, Nightlife

Well, it looks like another Major League Baseball team is out to limit alcohol and its effects on performance. As newly crowned Chicago Cubs president, Theo Epstein wants his players to get a good night's rest before each game. After all of the news that came out regarding the Red Sox clubhouse this offseason, it seems only fitting that Epstein would impose some sort of regulation...

Carlos Marmol: 2012 Fantasy Baseball Profile, the Closer you want in your corner

Carlos Marmol (credits below) Carlos Marmol and his career K-rate (11.74) will be the third best closer in fantasy baseball in 2012. Sure, he’s blown 22 saves in his career and had a 4.01 ERA last season, but the ERA was an aberration and Tyler Clippard, Francisco Cordero, Brian Wilson and others have all blown at least 17 saves since 2009. Since the 2009 season, Marmol has...

Athletics 12, Cubs 10

Even after a big game in spring training, Brandon Allen knows he still has work to do. If he wants to stick in the majors, he needs to be more consistent. ''I want to smooth some things out,'' Allen said Sunday after what he called the best Cactus League game of his career. Allen belted a grand slam and drove in seven runs, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Cubs...

University baseball returns to Thunder Bay after ten years

After ten long years, spring time baseball is finally returning to Lakehead University.  As a new member of the Thunder Bay community I couldn’t be more thrilled to see baseball on campus. Led by former Chicago Cubs farmhand Jason Hart, the school and student body are indeed in for a wild ride.  Hart really is the best man suited to lead this team to a championship.  Five...
