He went hitless for 17 at-bats long enough to obscure the memories of his torrid stretch earlier this month. But Alfonso Soriano jolted back to life in the eighth inning on Wednesday smashing a two-run home run to give the Yankees a 4-2 victory over the Blue Jays. Soriano pummeled an 80-mph pitch from knuckleballer R.A. Dickey who has struggled somewhat pitching in the American League. Dickey looked solid for most of the evening until Robinson Cano ripped a two-out single that inning. Two pitches later Soriano had shuttled the Yankees (67-59) toward their 10th victory in 13 games. The Yankees could complete a four-game sweep of the downtrodden Blue Jays on Thursday. This late in the season still clinging to life in the Wild Card chase every victory is vital. To grab one on a night like Wednesday when their offense was mostly quiet and their pitchers were the lowest men on the totem pole was divine. Working in a spot start Adam Warren gave up two runs and departed midway through the fourth inning. He served up a titanic home run to another former Met Josh Thole to tie the game in the fourth. The Yankees struggled to punish Dickey. Eduardo Nunez scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Romine in the second with Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar leaping at the left-field wall to prevent an extra-base hit. After Robinson Cano doubled in the third he scored on a single from Curtis Granderson. But Thole tied the game soon after and Warren left in favor of lefty David Huff. In his first extended appearance as a Yankee Huff strung together five scoreless innings. He allowed a single and walked four batters.
