Found April 02, 2013 on MLB Buzz:
The Rangers’ 10-year commitment to shortstop Elvis Andrus sounds huge, almost unfathomable. And it would be, if not for one thing: The commitment is not likely to be a 10-year commitment at all.   Andrus, who is under contract for the next two seasons, is expected to finalize his eight-year, $120 million extension with the Rangers later this week. But his deal includes an opt-out clause after 2018, according to Fox Sports Southwest’s Anthony Andro, potentially reducing the team’s commitment to four years, $60 million.   The potential escape is critical for Andrus and his agent, Scott Boras; Andrus likely will opt out if he stays healthy, becoming a free agent at age 30 instead of 34.   Why would the Rangers make such a concession?   Because it enables them to accomplish the rare feat of buying out four free-agent years on a Boras client – Boras generally shuns extensions, preferring his players to establish their values on the open market.   This way, the Rangers will control Andrus

This new extension start after the 2014 season, which...

Andrus vs. Escobar—Dayton Got a Bargain

by John Viril—When I read that the Texas Rangers committed $131 million over the next 10 years to 24-year-old SS Elvis Andrus, I could not help compare this deal to the current contract the Royals have with their own Alcides Escobar. Royals GM Dayton Moore got a screaming bargain. The Royals control 26-year-old Escobar for the next five seasons (3 under contract with two club options...

Elvis Andrus, Texas Ranger

The Texas Rangers have the best prospect in baseball, a 20-year-old shortstop named Jurickson Profar who the public projection systems think could be a league average player in the big leagues right now. He’s going to start the year in Triple-A, though, as neither middle infield position is currently available in Arlington, with Elvis Andrus and Ian Kinsler currently entrenched...

The Indians continue to talk to second baseman Jason Kipnis and outfielder...

No foolin’ — eight more years of Elvis!

The Rangers had the day off today, but fans had plenty to get excited about. Late last night and early today, the Rangers inked Elvis Andrus to an eight-year extension worth $120 million. I could not be happier about the announcement … once I confirmed that it was not an April Fool’s joke. I knew Elvis was coming up on free agency, and since he’s a Scott Boras client, I thought...

There is a clause that would allow Andrus to opt out after the fourth year if he chooses, but since the extension doesn’t kick in till after his current contract expires after 2014, that...
