The Los Angeles Angels entered August hoping to build some momentum, and indeed they have. But it is the reverse kind.

A 4-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday was the Angels' eighth defeat in their past 11 games. They have not won a series since taking two out of three at home against the Royals, July 23-25, and fell eight games out in the AL West, matching their largest deficit since the end of April. They are also two games out of a wild-card spot, fifth in a group of five teams seriously contending for the two playoff spots.

The downward slide prompted manager Mike Scioscia to keep the clubhouse doors closed for 20 minutes following Sunday's game to remind his team that they were still "one good week away" from being "within striking distance of our goal."

"I'm not going to talk about specifics (of the team meeting) but what I said is that sometimes when you feel you're buried is when you just want to have perspective," he said. "It's not how far (away) you are (from) your goal, but how close you are to your goal.

"I think that's the perspective we want to keep -- although we haven't played the way we need to play for this last month, we're still not far away from where we need to be."

Sunday's loss came despite starting ace RHP Jered Weaver, who had not lost in his previous 12 starts and had not lost at Angel Stadium all year. But the Angels managed just one run against Mariners LHP Jason Vargas and lost.

"It's tough. This is where we need to step it up," Weaver said. "We need to get some wins. We need to get some momentum. We're obviously not where we want to be. We're kind of back there (in the standings).

"We just need to get back to playing Angels baseball. We're not down by any means. ... We've got a lot of time left. This could snap tomorrow."
