The M-Braves were 3-3 this past week The (A) Rome Braves are the only team in the Braves system that had trouble winning this week.  Rome did not win a single game. However, they were well represented in the SAL All-Star Game this week. The Rome Braves and Lynchburg Hillcats both had players participating in their league All-Star Game this past Tuesday.  While Mississippi, Lynchburg, and Rome, all started their second half seasons, the Danville Braves got their season started in the Appalachian League. This week, and from now, on I will be putting (#) beside the players name if they are a top 20 prospect in the Braves organization.  This will be based on MLB.com’s ranking of the Braves prospects.  I hope that you enjoy this week’s Minor League Report. (AAA) Gwinnett Braves (32-44) (15.5 GB in Int South) (4-3 this week) The Gwinnett team turned it on late this week.  After dropping their first 3 games, they rattled off 4 straight victories to earn a winning record this week.  Pitching was big this week for the G-Braves.  That is a good sign as they have struggled all year in keeping opponents off the board.  Part of the help came from Cody Martin who was promoted from (AA) Mississippi. The G-Braves have had to make some roster moves of their own this week as they have seen both Tyler Pastornicky, and Paul Janish called up to the big league club.  One can only hope that the players filling in for Janish and Pastornicky can produce with RISP, something the Triple A team has struggled with. Ernesto Mejia got some practice and starts at 3B this week.  I have heard a few times that they are working on a position change with Mejia.  I’m not 100% sure, but this may have something to do with the needs of the parent club. Mejia’s bat has been good all season, so it may be worth a chance. This Week’s Top Performers Ernesto Mejia (1B/3B): 7-26 (.269 Avg), 4 R, 3 HR, and 8 RBI’s Season: .252 Avg, 17 HR, and 57 RBI’s Cody Martin (P) (#10 prospect): 1-0, 7 IP, 0 ER, and 7 K’s -1st Start w/ Gwinnett David Hale (P) (#19 prospect) 2 GS, 1-0, 10 IP, 0 ER, and 7 K’s Season: 2-3,35 IP, 4.37 ERA, and 28 K’s (AA) Mississippi Braves (2-1) (tied for 1st in Sou South) (3-3 this week) The M-Braves faltered last weekend and it cost them the 1st half title, as the Mobile BayBears edged them out on the final day of 1st half.  They got the 2nd half started right, as they won their 1st 2 games before losing to Birmingham on Friday night. It seems like every team in the Braves farm system got walk-off chances this week.  The M-Braves got their chance on Thursday night.  Jose Martinez came through as his walk-off single gave the M-Braves a 3-2 win over a really good Birmingham Barons team.  Pitching was not a strong point for the M-Braves this week.  Almost every night this week they were having to go to the bullpen in the 5th inning or earlier. This Week’s Top Performers: Edward Salcedo (3B) (#15 prospect): 7-21 (.333 Avg), 4 R, 2 HR, and 4 RBI Season:.275 Avg, 9 HR, 34 RBI Mycal Jones (OF): 8-20 (.400 Avg), 2 R, 1 SB, and 1 RBI Season:.211 Avg, 28 R, 2 HR, 17 SB, and 15 RBI’s Ryne Harper (P): 2 GA, 2-0, 3.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 K’s Season: 4-1, 24.1 IP, 1.82 ERA, 23 K’s (Adv. A) Lynchburg Hillcats (1-0) (1st place Carolina League North) (2-2 this week) The Hillcats had a rough end to the 1st half of their Carolina League season.  Lynchburg made one of the big roster moves for the Braves farm system.  The Hillcats and Rome Braves traded 2nd baseman for the 2nd half of the season.  SAL All-Star, Levi Hyams, came from Rome, while Ross Heffley was sent to Rome in return. Robby Hefflinger showed out this week at the Carolina/California League All-Star Game.  On Monday night, Hefflinger was the winner of the Home Run Derby that is held the day before the All-Star game each year.  He showed out during the game as well, as he finished 3-5 with a run scored.  He was named MVP of the game, as the Carolina League got a 12-2 victory.  Hillcat’s outfielder, David Rohm, was 1-2 with 2 RBI’s during the game as well.  Pitcher Ronan Pacheco also played.  He ended with 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER. I believe the Hillcat’s will make a run in their division for the 2nd half with Levi Hyams in the lineup.  This is a team that is full of talent, almost all the way down the lineup.  I personally believe that there are more future Major League players on this Lynchburg team than any other team in the Braves system. This Week’s Top Performers: Kyle Kubitza (3B): 4-10 (.400 Avg), 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI Season: .287 Avg, 40 R, 8 HR, and 32 RBI Will Skinner (OF): 3-9 (.333 Avg), 3 R, 2 HR, and 3 RBI Season: .205 Avg, 12 HR, and 32 RBI (6 HR since June 9th) (A) Rome Braves (0-2) (2 GB in SAL South) (0-4 this season) Rome did not have a good week as they did not record a win.  They were 0-2 before the All-Star break and have started the 2nd half 0-2 as well.  The Rome Braves can only blame their bats for their recent slide.  Not a single Rome player has had a great week at the plate. Just like Lynchburg, Rome was well represented in their All-Star Game.  Levi Hyams (now with Hillcats), Josh Elander, Eric Garcia, and Shae Simmons all made appearances in the game.  Levi Hyams provided the only run for the SAL South team as he homered in the game.  The SAL South team lost 2-1 to the SAL North team. Shae Simmons pitched 0.2 innings, 1 H, and 0 ER during the game.  Garcia and Elander did not have great days as they both combined to go 0-4. The Rome bats have vanished over the past few days.  They were outscored 25-15 in only 4 games this week.  This team has some talent, but is going through a slump just like all teams do.  I just hope that they get out of it before a team gets big division lead.  I also believe Rome has plenty of players that will be in a big league uniform in a few years.  Some will be with the Braves, but some of the talent will be good trade bait if the parent club is looking to make a deal. Reports are that Braves 1st Round pick, Jason Hursch, will be sent to Rome to start his career.  He should be pitching some time this next week. This Week’s Top Performers: Jose Perazza (SS) (#18 prospect): 3-15 (.200 Avg), 2 R, and 3 RBI Season: .262 Avg, 1 HR, 20 SB, and 15 RBI Felix Marte (OF): 3-9 (.333 Avg), 2 R, and 2 RBI Season: .275 Avg, 2 HR, and 16 RBI Lucas Sims (P) (#3 prospect): 5 IP, 1 ER, and 6 K’s Season: 2-2, 47 IP, 2.87 ERA, and 53 K’s (Ro) Danville Braves (2-0) (1st Place; App League East) (2-0 this week) The Danville Braves got their season started this week.  They have started off good.  After a blowout win in their opener, they won their 2nd game by way of a walk-off single by Justin Black.  They have some great talent on this team. They are led by this year’s 2nd round pick, Victor Caratini.  They also have the Braves 8th round pick, and son of Braves GM Frank Wren, Kyle Wren.  The Danville Braves also have Matt Kimbrel on their roster.  Matt is the younger brother of Braves standout closer, Craig Kimbrel. A lot of Braves talent has started their career out with this Danville club.  I hope to see them sometime this summer and check out the talent in person.  With the talent they have, they are a lot of people’s pick to win this year’s Appalachian League title.  That will be a tough task with the White Sox having a handful of their highly touted prospects starring their season with the Bristol White Sox. This Week’s Top Performers: Kyle Wren (CF): 3-8 (.375 Avg), 3 R, and 1 RBI Victor Caratini (3B): 4-7 (.571 Avg), 3 R, and 2 RBI Michael Flores (P): 1 GS, 1-0, 5 IP, 0 ER, and 9 K’s I hope you enjoyed this week’s Minor League Report. As you can see, the Braves have a lot of good talent coming up from their system. That is something the Braves have done year after year. Producing this good talent is great for the parent club as they can either use them to fill holes, or trade them to fill those holes. I’m looking forward to these next few month’s and following these guys road to the show. The post Atlanta Braves Minor League Report 6-15 to 6-21 appeared first on Atlanta Bullpen.
