PLAYERS: Pete Rose
TEAMS: Chicago White Sox
Long before Biogenesis, or BALCO, or the Mitchell Report, or Pete Rose betting on games, we had the first major scandal in Major League Baseball, the 1919 Black Sox Scandal. Eight members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of taking money and tanking games in the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. While they were all acquitted in a court of law, baseball did away with due process (shocker) and banned them from the game. The story goes that they would have been convicted in a court of law had a signed confession been present at trial. It allegedly went missing before the case began, and they walked. Now, Lelands, a sports memorablia auctioneer is offering a cool one milllion dollars to whoever can produce the document. Via FTW: In the most famous scandal in baseball history, eight players from the White Sox – “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, Eddie Cicotte, Claude “Lefty” Williams, Buck Weaver, Arnold “Chick” Gandil, Fred McMullin, Charles “Swede” Risberg and Oscar “Happy” Felsch – were accused of fixing the 1919 World Series, which the Reds won five games to three. The players, who became known as the “Black Sox,” were indicted on criminal charges the following [...]

White Sox rumors: Chris Sale not available

The Chicago White Sox are poised to become one of the most significant sellers on the trade market this summer. The team has already dealt reliever Matt Thornton, and players such as Jake Peavy, Jesse Crain and Alex Rios continue to be mentioned in trade rumors. Still, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports continues to hear that White Sox ace Chris Sale remains unavailable. continue...

White Sox activate Peavy from DL

The pitching-starved Chicago White Sox activated right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy from the disabled list Friday and could be about a week away from getting right-handed set-up man Jesse Crain back as well. Peavy (6-4, 4.30) returns to the starting rotation Saturday against lefty Paul Maholm (9-8, 3.98) and the Atlanta Braves at U.S. Cellular Field. Peavy, 32, has been sidelined since...

White Sox push back SP Peavy

Jake Peavy's scheduled start has been pushed back by the Chicago White Sox, who may trade the right-hander before Wednesday's deadline. Peavy was to pitch in Tuesday night's game against the Indians, but the team said he will now start Wednesday unless he's dealt. Peavy will be replaced by rookie Andre Rienzo, who was to make his big league debut and become the first...

Jake Peavy will rejoin White Sox on Saturday

The Chicago White Sox will get a boost on Saturday.  Jake Peavy will rejoin the 25-man roster.  Peavy has been on the DL since the beginning of June with a broken rib.  The rib has taken some time to heal, but he is healthy and ready to return. Danks, Peavy open Sox's second half: Jake Peavy will rejoin the White Sox on Saturday as part of their tentative... http://t...

Pirates targeting White Sox stars?

The Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves in the unusual position of being buyers at the trade deadline, and they reportedly have their eyes on two White Sox players.

Jake Peavy to rejoin White Sox rotation Saturday

Jake Peavy is set to rejoin the Chicago White Sox rotation on Saturday, against the Atlanta Braves according to the Chicago Sun Times. It will be Peavy’s first call back to action since June 4 when he pitched with a displaced rib and lasted 21/3 innings in Seattle against the Mariners. Peavy had one rehab start at Double-A Birmingham, giving up one run on five hits over five innings...

The case for trading Chris Sale

At 37-55, the White Sox are currently 14 games back of the Tigers in the AL Central and 15.5 games back of a Wild Card spot. They are one of the very worst teams in baseball this year, so it was no surprise when Jon Heyman of reported the team was "open for business" last month. They're selling. That "open for business" sign comes with a disclaimer...

Trade Values: Alexei Ramirez

Last night we heard that the Pittsburgh Pirates were looking at Alex Rios, and also might consider Alexei Ramirez. I’ve already done a Trade Values article on Rios. That article included a brief estimate of the value of Ramirez, although that came from just glancing at his stats and contracts, rather than digging in deep and looking at him closer. With last night’s rumor, I decided...

Red Sox rumors: Alex Rios, Jake Peavy, Michael Young

The Boston Red Sox enter the second half of the regular season sitting in first place in the American League East. While they’re looking down at all other teams in the East, their advantage in the standings hasn’t stopped them from exploring trade options to improve their club. Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have scouted Chicago White Sox outfielder...

Pirates Looking at Alex Rios; Might Be Looking at Alexei Ramirez

The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking at Alex Rios, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. He also adds that “people familiar with Pittsburgh’s thinking suggest they wouldn’t be surprised if the Pirates expand the talks to include Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez”. That’s similar to the trade idea Jim Bowden floated out there a week ago, although I don’t think the cost would...

Report: Red Sox Scouted Alex Rios, Michael Young in Past Week, Will Watch Jake Peavy Closely

The Red Sox and White Sox already consummated one trade this season. Perhaps another one won’t be too far behind. The Red Sox, who already acquired reliever Matt Thornton from the White Sox, scouted Chicago outfielder Alex Rios and will scout pitcher Jake Peavy closely over his next couple of starts, according to The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo. The Red Sox reportedly scouted...

White Sox broadcaster Hawk Harrelson documentary airing on MLBN

Hawk Harrelson and his wife are hosting a family party revolving around the MLB Network documentary “Hawk: The Colorful Life of Ken Harrelson,” airing at 6 p.m. CST tonight. I’m DVRing it, and will be back later on my Chicago sports media website to critique it. For me, watching MLB Network is about as exciting being on hold with the cable company or paying utility bills online...

Andrzej Fonfara training hard for showdown with Gabriel Campillo on August 16 at US Cellular Field

IBO Light Heavyweight World Champion Andrzej Fonfara (23-2, 16 KOs) is hard at work in the high heat and humidity, sparring with Michigan heavyweight Jordan Shimmell and Chicago cruiserweight Dimar Ortuz at Sam Colonna's Boxing Gym in Chicago, in preparation for his upcoming showdown against former world champion Gabriel "EL Chico Guapo" Campillo (21-5-1, 8 KOs) of...

Tim McCarver says networks not allowed to show Pete Rose clips

It's no secret that Major League Baseball has placed a lifetime ban on all-time hit king and Cincinnati native Pete Rose. The league has pretty much ignored all of Rose's achievements since banning the Reds legend for betting on baseball. In fact, Commissioner Bud Selig would probably like it if there were no traces of Rose's impact on the game available at all. So...

Pete Rose Highlights Banned by MLB on Television Broadcasts, Tim McCarver Says (Audio)

One of the reasons that Major League Baseball supposedly commissioned the Mitchell Report was, according to commissioner Bud Selig, that the sport didn’t want to run away from its past. Well, according to the actions of MLB, there may be certain parts of the game’s history the league is more than willing to willfully ignore. Tim McCarver joined The Dan Patrick Show on Monday...
