When I remember watching Aurelio Lopez, I think of the Houston Astros pitcher who gave up what could have been the go-ahead run in the 14th inning of the 1986 NLCS. Of course, Billy Hatcher’s HR off Jesse Orosco ties the game. Lopez stayed on until the 16th inning, where he allowed the first two Mets to reach base as the Mets scored three runs. As we all remember, Orosco gave two of them back before striking out Kevin Bass with the tying runs on base as the Mets held on for a 7-6 NLCS clinching victory. ——————————————————————————– Lopez would have been 64 as September 21st was his birthday. Sadly, September 22, 2012 is the 20 anniversay of his death. While Lopez pitched for the Astros, it was in the twilight of his career. He pitched briefly in 1987 for the Astros before he was released. He enjoyed most of his success in the Mexican Leagues in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a starting pitcher.
