Texas

Coming into the season many had the Texas Rangers among the top World Series contenders.

So it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Rangers exit the All-Star break with the League’s second best record, just a half game behind the surging Yankees.

Amazingly, this team still has a lot of room to improve down the stretch as they look to get healthy and to get Josh Hamilton closer to the form he showed in May.

Also looking to improve his form is starter Derek Holland. He essentially had the month of June off and looked sharper in his last start before the break.

Millwood Baltimore Orioles vs. Mariners betting odds and handicapping preview – July 13

Starter Kevin Millwood has been better than expected

He also should be happy to see the Mariners, the team that he has the most wins and strikeouts against in his young career.

That is if he can get his last outing against the M’s out of his system. On May 5 he gave up 8 runs in less than 2 innings at Safeco.

Seattle

Nothing has gone right for Seattle this season with the Mariners owning the worst record in the AL. Surprisingly this team is worse at home than on the road but they have held their own against the Rangers winning 5 of 10 against the top club in their division.

Amazingly, in their last two games against Texas the Mariners have scored 31 runs.

That is usually a two week total for this light hitting squad.

Starter Kevin Millwood has been better than expected for the Mariners posting a solid 3.69 ERA for the season.

Unfortunately the team has not been able to pick him up often as the M’s are still just 6-10 in his starts. 2 of those wins are against Texas with the team overall 2-1 with the veteran starting against a former team.

It is hard to predict what you are going to get from Millwood but this might be a nice value spot to play Seattle.

O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: Seattle 6 – Texas 5

Rangers vs Mariners In Seattle: Pitching, series preview, analysis & predictions

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Danny Ferguson reports on the Mariners series matchup with the Texas Rangers. PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Derek Holland (5-4, 5.05 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Kevin Millwood (3-6, 3.69 ERA) in the series opener. Millwood hasn't won a game since the end of May, but has pitched well in his past few starts.

Smoak Out?

It might be shape up or ship out time for Seattle first baseman Justin Smoak. Ever since his high-profile arrival from Texas, Smoak has failed to live up to expectations. His manager, Eric Wedge, makes it sound as if the organization is nearing their wits’ end and may make a move: We’ve been patient, they’ve been addressed, and we’ve come at them in different ways and different...

All-Star Break Changes For The Seattle Mariners

This past week before the All-Star break wasn’t a very good one for the Mariners, as they lost 2-out-of-3 to each of the teams they faced. Taking games deep into extra innings in 2 of the 3 games played against the Oakland Athletics, the Mariners would come up short both times. Tied at 1 a piece in Game 1, in the 11th inning, a 3-run, Chris Carter home run would end the duel....

Seattle Mariners’ Top Pick Zunino Begins Pro Career With The Everett Aquasox

Mike Zunino begins his journey in professional baseball with the Everett Aquasox on Thursday. Zunino, the third overall selection by the Seattle Mariners in last year’s amateur draft is expected to be fast-tracked through the minor leagues if all goes well. The former Florida Gator catcher won the 2012 USA Golden Spikes Award, which is bestowed to the nation’s top amateur baseball...

HYPE Files: Rafael Montero

Welcome to the second edition of HYPE Files! As a reminder, these HYPE Files will be a weekly guide to: 1. Shine light on prospects not getting their due respect and 2. Extinguish the hype on some prospects that will probably end up being mentioned in the same breath as Lastings Milledge and Yusmeiro Petit. Where’s the hype? Rafael Montero, SP: You may have seen this name towards...

Texas Rangers Trade Rumors: starting pitchers

The Texas Rangers headed into the break with the second-best record in the majors at 52-34. They have been on top of the AL West all season, and by far they look to be the strongest team in the AL. However, the Rangers starting pitchers have been beleaguered by injuries this season, forcing them to potentially seek trades to bring in quality starting pitching. Could Greinke finish...

The Orioles and Jason Vargas

The still-surprising Baltimore Orioles are rumored to be “poking around” on Seattle Mariners pitcher Jason Vargas. I am not sure how that sort of physical contact is permissible (nailed it!), but it makes some sense for the Orioles to try and improve their team. Is Vargas the right pitcher to aim for, though, even if they can’t get player like Matt Garza? Vargas (29) floundered...

Report: Mariners' Felix Hernandez, Dustin Ackley, Kyle Seager All 'Untouchable' at Trade Deadline

If any team wants to get better, they have to make some moves. If the Seattle Mariners want to get better, then they'd better make a lot of moves. However, that seems to be unlikely as the trade deadline approaches. Mariners ace Felix Hernandez and middle infielders Kyle Seager and Dustin Ackley are reportedly untouchable at this year's trade deadline, according to FOX Sports...

Mariners: Aggressive or not?

If the Mariners plan to make an aggressive move at the July 31 non-waiver deadline, they’ve got an interesting way of showing it. While one Mariners official says the team is “wide open” on potential deals, rival clubs report that the M’s have made a long list of players untouchable in trades. The list includes right-hander Felix Hernandez, second baseman Dustin Ackley...

Mariners sign David Pauley to a Minor League deal

The Seattle Mariners have agreed to a Minor League deal with right handed pitcher David Pauley according to Shannon Drayer of 710am ESPN Seattle. Pauley, 29, began the season with the Angels, but was claimed by the Blue Jays after being designated for assignment twice by the Angels. Then, the Blue Jays also designated him for assignment earlier this month. In 2012, Pauley has pitched...

Rangers-Mariners Preview

The Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners are separated by 16 1/2 games in the AL West, but it's been a different story when they've met on the field. The best and worst teams in the division have split their first 10 meetings heading into Friday night's opener of a three-game set in Seattle. Texas (52-34) has scored a major league-high 443 runs and Seattle (36-51) has...

Nathan nearly spoils Holland’s win

Is it just me or did the All-Star break feel really long this year?  That Home Run Derby was OK (I picked Prince to win it, so I was glad to see that), and the All-Star Game absolutely sucked (where did the American League bats go?).  And then there were two days of nothing.  No baseball.  So sad. It was good to have my boys back in action tonight, even if it was the start of...

Beltre homers, Rangers beat Mariners

SEATTLE (AP) -- Derek Holland pitched into the eighth and Adrian Beltre hit a two-run homer to help the Texas Rangers hang on against the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Friday night at Safeco Field. Holland (6-4) entered the game with a 5.05 ERA and only one scoreless start in 2012, which was when he threw six innings at Baltimore on May 10. Friday, he threw 7 2-3 innings, struck out...
