The Pirates were able to earn a much needed victory on Tuesday night, helping to erase some of the sting from a rough start to the season’s second half.

Erik Bedard was finally able to put together a pretty good start. It wasn’t flawless (8 hits and 4 walks) but he was able to pitch out of trouble and make it through 6.2 innings against a good lineup. That’s a big step in the right direction for Bedard, who very well could be the “X-factor” that determines whether or not this starting rotation can be a good one in the second half.

Andrew McCutchen went 2 for 3 with a towering homer. He’s now hitting .375 with 22 bombs. Neil Walker also had two hits, bringing him above the .300 mark.  Behind those two, the offense was able to get to rookie Christian Friedrich and build up an early lead. The bullpen was able to make it stand up, although Juan Cruz forced Joel Hanrahan into duty with two walks in the ninth inning.

Pirates 6, Rockies 2 / Box / 2012 Record: 50-40 / Next: Wednesday, at Rockies, 3:10

MVP: McCutchen (+.139) / LVP: Alvarez (-.096) / Key play: Rutledge’s 4th inning triple
