Giants first baseman (and converted outfielder) Brandon Belt is headed to the Dominican Republic to work on his swing in winter ball.

Belt wrote on his blog that he made so many adjustments this season that his swing became a complicated mess. He also said he planned to condition as an outfielder this season instead of focusing on bulking up to play first base.

Interestingly, Belt (who was regarded as the Giants’ first baseman of the future) will no doubt run into Angel Villalona, who was the team’s first baseman of the future five years ago. Villalona just dropped his lawsuit against the Giants and has accepted an assignment to play winter ball down in the Dominican Republic.

Even though he had a terrific final week of the season, Belt feels he has room to improve:

Over this season, I’ve made adjustment after adjustment after adjustment so that it all kind of clustered together into one big complicated muddle. There’s so much going on during the season that you can’t really step back and press “reset.’’ You’re just hurtling forward. My mechanics have always been the same, and I lost them somewhere along the way. So I need to untangle the mess and get back to my original form because that’s where I’m at my best. The simplicity will take over and I won’t think about the mechanics as much and I can just go up there and hit.

Belt batted .225/.306/.418 in his rookie campaign, with 9 HR and 18 RBI. He walked 20 times compared to 57 strikeouts. During the final week of the season, he hit .318/.348/.500 in 23 plate appearances.
