Poor Kevin Burkhardt.

Guy finally gets his first chance at the big time ... an announcing gig on FOX Sports to call Saturday's Braves/Mets game. He would get to show his knowledge and his persona to a bigger audience. I mean, sure he asked R.A. Dickey the same seven questions that he's asked him all season on SNY. But now he gets to do it in a real suit! And the world would finally see what they've been missing.

Problem is the game sucked and everybody that was watching that mess instead of college football were all of a sudden searching the remote to watch Florida or Rutgers or anything other than the Mets by the second inning after Kris Medlen hit an RBI double to deep center field while Jordany Valdespin was running towards Two Boots Pizza. Hell, if we wanted to watch a shellacking like the one the Braves put on the Mets, we'll search the remote to see if Savannah State was on. At least they covered the spread.

So I'm guessing about three people were watching at the end of the 11-3 loss, especially after tornadoes and hurricanes and microburst delayed the game for an hour and threatened to blow the Mets away harder than the Braves did. Having to actually come back after an hour and play baseball for two innings under skies that were blacker than Bobby Valentine's fake mustache must have been the penance for this terrible season. At any moment a tornado could have sent various team members to Kansas or Buffalo or even Las Vegas. I wonder how many fans might have wished for that? Looking at the crowd at the start of the game, you would have thought the tornadoes had already hit Citi Field and blew the rest of the crowd away.

Here's how bad this game and this series has been: Brian McCann had 12 hits since August first (24 games). He had four on Saturday. Dan Uggla had 11 hits in his last 23 games before Friday. He had five in the last two games. Burkhardt referred to this series as their chicken soup. This is the kind of analogy that America has been missing ... the Mets pitching staff as chicken soup. Too bad nobody heard it because they had long since clicked away. And too bad, because Burkhardt could have dazzled even a limited audience with a brilliant call of a walk-off win and propelled him to bigger and better things, and maybe sent him on the way to one day kick Joe Buck out of the number one FOX chair. Instead, Burkhardt gets a glorified spring training game under dark skies. Would have been great for him to take full advantage of an opportunity that he was reportedly denied once before. Instead, he gets Jeremy Hefner lasting two and two thirds of an inning and everybody reaches for the remote to either change the channel or throw it through the television.

Poor bastard.
