Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez says he isn’t ready to be activated off the designated list like he initially said when stating he would rejoin the team on Friday. But the good news is that Perez’s court appearance on drug charges has been moved up to July 9. Perez was placed on the disabled list on May 27 with shoulder soreness after a stretch of three games where he allowed seven runs in just 2.2 innings pitched, including 5 walks, and giving up three home runs. Matt Loede of 92.3 in Cleveland was the first to break the news on twitter that Perez would not return Friday as previously stated. Lode also shared that Perez will throw long toss on Wednesday, and then throw a bullpen session on Friday and will be re-evaluated this weekend. Even though Terry Francona made clear there were no physical problems with Perez, Tom Withers of the Associated Press shared that Perez was indeed dealing with “mechanical” issues in his rehab on Tuesday in Akron where he allowed five runs on three home runs, in just one inning. He struck two batters out and allowed a double and a single. Doesn’t seem like Perez is ready to get back to the bigs. Many think the off-field issues with Perez are impacting his on-field performance. A pitcher who already struggles with mental toughness, has a court appearance to worry about as well, where he and his wife Melanie pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor drug abuse after a package on marijuana was delivered to his home in a Cleveland suburb. Is Perez really missed? Since he was placed on the DL the Tribe has gone 28-23. The head case seems to have has some issues the last few times on the mound. Currently in the Cleveland Bullpen, there are seven relievers; Vinnie Pestano, Joe Smith, Cody Allen, Nick Hagadone, Rich Hill, Bryan Shaw and Matt Albers. Even though there hasnt been that many save situations, Vinnie has been the closer for the last few times.
