TORONTO - Jon Lester was superb through the first six innings on Sunday, allowing the Toronto Blue Jays just one hit. But after getting two outs in the seventh inning, things unraveled for the Boston Red Sox left-hander. He gave up three hits, including a run-scoring single by Omar Vizquel and a two-run homer by Adeiny Hechavarria, and the Blue Jays went on for a 5-0 victory to avoid a three-game sweep before 21,698 at Rogers Centre. "I just left a curveball middle-up," Lester said. "Vizquel has been around for a long time and didn't try to do too much with it and got a base knock. "Next pitch, right back to executing, did what I had to do and [Hechavarria] put a better swing on it. It's baseball. You make a great pitch, they hit it. You make a pitch right down the middle, they hit it right to somebody. It's just the way it goes sometimes." Lester (9-12) was done for the day after seven innings. He allowed four hits, one walk and thr...

Jacoby Ellsbury hits a two run home run in the sixth and even more cushion with an RBI single in the seventh to help give the Sox a 5-2 victory. Ellsbury finished the game going 3-for-5 and held down the fort for the offense as Loney & pinch hitting Mauro Gomez were the only other Sox to get a hit. Thankfully the Sox managed to get four walks from Rays pitching.  Aaron...

David Ortiz Expected Back Next Season After Payroll-Clearing Trade as Red Sox Plan to Build Through Young Talent

The Red Sox are headed toward their first losing season since 1997. From here on out, they have been confined to playing spoiler to the remaining teams on the schedule: the Rays, Orioles and Yankees. The September roster is certainly not what Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine envisioned when he arrived, yet the Sox are still out there fighting for every win. Let's take a look at...

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, when Yan Gomes grounded a two-out single up the middle against Jon Lester (9-12), just the second hit for the Blue Jays. Rajai Davis came on as a pinch runner and...

Yunel Escobar Wants You to Hate Him Too!

After the Atlanta Braves traded Yunel Escobar to the Toronto Blue Jays, speculation was that the deal was made because no one on the team liked him...not because of what he brought to the field.Well, more than two years later, the shortstop apparently wants everyone to despise him.As Craig Calcaterra over at HardballTalk writes:Caught by Jays fan @james_in_to and featured over at...

John Lackey and Redemption

John Lackey. The very name has become a symbol to Red Sox fans, a symbol of the dark pall that has overtaken the once-beloved team. I myself have been guilty of it. When writing about a possible Sox pitching prospect, I referred to the hurler's ERA as "Lackeyesque".; Of course, it wasn't always that way. When Lackey was signed as a free agent by Boston in December...

Bobby Valentine Clarifies 'Weak Roster' Comment, Says Players Still Working Hard (Video)

The Red Sox might not have a star-filled lineup anymore, but those on the scorecard are still playing their hardest. Bobby Valentine recently suggested that the Red Sox' September roster was one of the weakest in the history of baseball. On Sunday, he clarified those comments by saying that several players have been injured and that there just isn't much depth. He made sure...

Jacoby Ellsbury, Aaron Cook Combine to Break Up Alex Cobb's No-Hitter With Time-Honored Moves (Video)

If a pitcher is going to throw a no-hitter, he's going to need a couple of things to go his way. Alex Cobb was doing his best to get one on Monday, but Jacoby Ellsbury's two-run home run in the sixth inning quickly put an end to that idea and ensured that Cobb didn't catch the breaks he needed. As NESN Nation's Dan Duquette points out, however, Red Sox starter Aaron...

Red Sox 81st Loss Ends Historic Streak; Boston Heads to Tampa in Control of AL East Destiny

Boston took two of three from the Blue Jays in Toronto over the weekend, but the one loss was enough to leave them in last place at 66-81, one game back of the Jays (66-79).  The Red Sox 81st loss of the season guarantees that for the first time since 1997 the club will fail [...]
