Baseball isn’t necessarily in danger of going extinct, but the TV ratings the sport has seen in the past few years aren’t exactly encouraging, either. Yet one of the game’s great ambassadors, however, thinks one potential World Series matchup could be really, really bad for the game. Longtime broadcaster Bob Costas might have been speaking with a touch of hyperbole, but he’s got a pretty strong stance about a potential Reds-Rays World Series matchup. Cited in a New York Times piece titled “Is the Game Over?” Costas used the potential matchup as a way to further illustrate baseball’s TV struggles. “If Tampa Bay plays Cincinnati in the World Series, I don’t care if the series goes seven games and every game goes into extra innings, baseball is screwed,” Costas told the paper.“That’s not fair to the Rays or the Reds, but it’s true.” It’s a little dramatic, perhaps — even baseball could survive a Fall Classic featuring those two markets — but it does speak to the larger issue, wh

Reds quotes after Tuesday's season finale

The 2013 campaign for the Cincinnati Reds was supposed to end much differently than it did Tuesday night at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Reds were dealt a fatal blow by the Pirates to cap off a season in what many around Cincinnati are sure to regard as disappointing. Needless to say, the bitter defeat leaves many questions heading into the offseason, an offseason that is likely...

The Tampa Bay Rays have their work cut out for themselves. The Cleveland Indians are the hottest team in Baseball.

The Tampa Bay Rays have to travel to Cleveland, Ohio to take on the Cleavland Indians in the wild card game. The Rays beat the Texas Rangers to advance to the wild card game and a loss in Cleveland would eliminate them from the Play-offs. The Rays have handled the Indians well this season. They beat them 4 out of the 6 times they faced them this season.  The Rays still can’t take...

Longoria, Price put Rays in playoffs

If recent history is any indication, Evan Longoria and David Price won't enjoy tearful retirements -- together -- with the Tampa Bay Rays, the way Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte did in pinstripes a few days ago. The Rays' payroll and revenues are such that they trade stars who aren't signed to long-term extensions. Longoria will stay a while, since he's under contract...

Dusty Baker proves he is not the guy to get the Reds into the big show. They have been eliminated, is it time to get rid of him?

Dusty Baker took his team to the Wild Card race and once again he comes away with nothing but his big mouth intact. Baker fails to manage his Reds properly. He continues to prove why he might not be the right manager to get the Cincinnati Reds to the next level. He watched as his Reds were eliminated by the Pittsburgh Pirates and he didn’t do what it takes to come away with the...

Rays beat Rangers in one-game playoff behind David Price’s complete game

The Tampa Bay Rays are headed to the playoffs following a 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers in the American League wild-card tiebreaker game Monday night. David Price pitched his fourth complete game this season, while third baseman Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer .

Tampa Bay Rays defeat Rangers to advance to Wild Card game

On Monday night, the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Texas Rangers 5-2 to advance to a Wild Card game with the Cleveland Indians.  Tampa Bay battled the last month of the season to secure a spot in the Wild Card game, but were forced to play their 163rd game of the season against the Rangers to decide. Rays Kevin Kiermaier Makes MLB Debut in Game 163

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier played most of the season for AA Montgomery before advancing to AAA Durham. With Desmond Jennings nursing a sore hamstring, Kiermaier got a surprise call on Sunday night and he was on his way to Arlington to join the team for a game against the Texas Rangers in game 163. “I felt like if I played well they were going to have to make a...

Dallas Latos case shows the worst of Twitter

The Pirates beat the Reds last night in the NL Wild Card game, but an ugly storyline ensued surrounding Dallas Latos, the wife of Reds pitcher Mat Latos. During the game, Latos tweeted that she was assaulted by a Pirates fan at PNC Park. Got punched in the head at least 3 times by a pirates fan so this has been cool. — Dallas Latos (@DallasLatos) October 2...

MLB Game Picks - Tuesday: October 1, 2013

If you are a fan of the Texas Rangers, how do you view the past few years? Is it a good thing that the team has been very good and has continued to make the post season? Or is it ultimately a bad thing with two losses in the World Series--one a brutal loss--two play-in losses and September fades? Judging from the reaction of my Twitter buds who are Rangers fans, it was another brutal...

What do you write when you can’t find the words?

Nearly a year later, we find ourselves back at the original scene of the crime. We’re still trying to solve the case. The Reds are still trying to win a postseason series under Dusty Baker. It’s been nearly 20 years and the people like me who grew up at Riverfront Stadium are still waiting for the Reds to truly return to glory. I don’t know what you can say in a post like this...

Rays Hope Price Is Right Against Rangers

It took them 162 games and the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers couldn’t settle the battle for the second American League Wild Card berth.  They will meet tonight in a tiebreaker game in Texas at 8pm ET on TBS to decide who gets to move on to AL Wild Card game in Cleveland on Wednesday. Texas earned the right to host the tiebreaker game based on their 4-3 record against Tampa...

Just Watching some Baseball and Stuff

Sitting here watching the Rays/Indians Wild Card game, and since the Danny Salazar vs. Alex Cobb match-up is less than intriguing rather than Live Blog the game I'll just write down some thoughts as they run through my head instead, especially since I haven't been around for a while what with feeling a bit under the weather. Bets for tonight: Rays -115 Alex Cobb UNDER...

NL Wildcard Preview: Reds at Pirates

Last night was just the opening act, tonight the playoffs officially begin! This year’s playoffs (minus not having the Mets) to me look to be very enjoyable on paper. I don’t think there is a team that I legitimately can say I have a strong feeling “should” win it all. Tonight, the Pittsburgh Pirates welcome the Cincinnati Reds to beautiful PNC Park. This is a tough game...
