Outfielder Jason Bourgeois, who was hitting .205 for Class AAA Omaha, was called up Wednesday. Outfielder Wil Myers, one of the top hitting prospects in the minor leagues, was left in Omaha, where he was hitting .309. Myers hit his 12th home run Wednesday night since a mid-May promotion from Class AA Northwest Arkansas. But why was he still in minors and Bourgeois in the majors? Manager Ned Yost said the Royals did not want to promote Myers, a 21-year-old right-handed hitter, until there was a slot for him to play every day. So why not Derrick Robinson, a switch-hitting speedster with a .306 batting average for Omaha, or David Lough, who was hitting .289 with 17 stolen bases in Class AAA? Both are on the 40-man big league roster. The reason is Bourgeois hits left-handers well. He was batting .324 against left-handers in the Pacific Coast League and a puny .168 vs. right-handers. He is a .320 hitter (63-for-197) against left-handed pitchers in his big-league career. "We've got a chance to see a bunch of lefties in the next week, 10 days," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "We need another right-handed bat in the lineup." Myers' time will come, and when it does, he will play every day. Meanwhile, Bourgeois and Jarrod Dyson will platoon in center. NOTES, QUOTES -- RHP Felipe Paulino, who has a torn ulnar collateral ligament, will undergo surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles. Dr. Lewis Yocum will perform the operation. It will be the fourth Tommy John procedure on a Royals pitcher this year, following operations for RHP Joakim Soria, RHP Blake Wood and LHP Danny Duffy. -- OF Lorenzo Cain had his minor league rehab assignment transferred to Class AAA Omaha. In his first game, he went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer Wednesday. Cain, out since April 11 due to groin and hip injuries, had been rehabbing with Class AA Northwest Arkansas for a week. -- 2B Yuniesky Betancourt tops the Royals with 21 RBI in June. Betancourt has 14 RBI in his past nine games. -- DH Billy Butler doubled Wednesday for the first time in 17 games. It was only his second double in the past 36 games. He needs two more doubles to reach 200 for his career. -- RHP Luke Hochevar and LHP Bruce Chen are a combined 4-0 in their past four starts. The Royals have only victory from a starter since June 4 not named Hochevar or Chen. That was when RHP Vin Mazzaro won June 15 at St. Louis. BY THE NUMBERS: 20-19 -- The Royals' record when they hit a home run. QUOTE TO NOTE: "It would be nice if we made things easier for ourselves once in a while. This is the third time now we've fought back to get to five games under .500, but then we just take a few steps back. Our goal was to get back to .500 by the All-Star break." -- RF Jeff Francoeur.
