On Saturday, with the Giants out of position players, Aubrey Huff played second base for the first time in his career. It was an unexpected defensive alignment, but it was probably the Giants' best option. Or was it? Sure it was. OR WAS IT? Let's review.  Here is what the Giants' defense looked like in the ninth:  One man at every position. But here is another way they could have played it:  Two men at first base. And nobody at second base. Oh, yeah. Hot and sexy double-first basemen action.  You're thinking this is insane. But five batters hit in the inning, and let's review a hypothetical universe where Aubrey Huff and Brandon Belt were both playing first base.  First batter:  Single to right field. No involvement of the second baseman or the first baseman. No change.  Second batter:  Sacrifice bunt. Belt fields, throws to Aubrey Huff covering. Exactly as it would have been had both men been playing first base. No change. Third b...

Giants 4, Mets 5: That One Stung

Ryan Vogelsong pitched an excellent game today. Through the first six innings, that was the story. Some things happened later in the game that distracted from this story, which is a shame. But kudos to Vogelsong for another strong outing. Anyway, there were a couple questionable decisions by Bochy that contributed to this loss… The decision to play Aubrey Huff over Brandon Belt...

Projecting the Series: Giants vs. Mets

The Giants are pretty much back on track after getting swept to start the season, they have series wins in the last three that they have played and the pitching staff which had let them down has been the strength of the team (with the notable exception of Tim Lincecum). The bats have cooled down a bit but the team is still averaging over 4 runs a game on the season. ...

Mets beat Giants on Posey error

Ruben Tejada scored the winning run on a throwing error by catcher Buster Posey and the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 Saturday after blowing a three-run lead moments earlier in one of the wackiest ninth innings imaginable. Mike Pelfrey tossed eight terrific innings, and it appeared the Mets were headed to a fairly simple victory. They were leading 4-2 with two...

Giants-Mets postponed by rain, doubleheader Monday

The game between the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets has been postponed because of rain and rescheduled as part of a single-admission doubleheader Monday beginning at 4:10 p.m. With rain already falling and the forecast calling for showers all day, the game was called about 90 minutes before the scheduled start Sunday. Giants ace Tim Lincecum, slated to pitch Sunday, will...

Pre-game: Game 13 - Giants @ Mets

The Mets and Giants will look to dodge rain drops this afternoon when they take the field at 1:10 pm in the third of their four game series against the San Francisco Giants.  Having split the first two games, the Mets will look to build upon the surprisingly strong eight inning outing of Mike Pelfrey yesterday, which ended in a Mets win, thanks in part to a ninth inning error by...

Post”poned” Game: Mets Washed Out vs. Giants

What was supposed to be a pitching matchup featuring Tim Lincecum of the Giants and Dillon Gee of the Mets won’t happen anytime today as the Mets-Giants game slated for 1:10 p.m. has been postponed for heavy rain in Queens this afternoon. The game will be made up as a single admission doubleheader tomorrow afternoon that will start at 1:10 p.m. as opposed to the originally scheduled...

Pre-Game: San Francisco Giants (6-6) @ New York Mets (7-5)

Since the 4-0 start to open the 2012 season, quality pitching hasn’t been as easy to come by. Jon Niese will try to help give the Mets some stability tonight as they host the San Francisco Giants for the first time this year. For a team with the lowest of expectations, it isn’t too shabby being able to look at this team and say that this series is all about keeping the overall...

Game Preview: Giants @ Mets

The Giants come into town to take on the Mets in a four game stretch. April is a tough month for the Mets as they had four consecutive in division series followed up by the Giants. Anyway, the Mets look to rebound from their last two starts as they take on Barry Zito tonight behind Jon Niese. Niese is 2-0 on the season with a 2.13 ERA over 12.2 innings pitched. Niese doesn’t really...
