What Shane Victorino's Bad Back Means and May Mean

The Red Sox biggest move of the offseason in terms of dollars committed was the signing of Shane Victorino. Coming off a disappointing 2012, his detractors described him as past his prime and at best a 4th outfielder. The Red Sox saw that Victorino's speed and defense were still there and gambled that 2012 was a blip when they signed him to a three-year deal. Early on he had...

Clay Buchholz Accused of Doctoring Baseball by Toronto Broadcaster Dirk Hayhurst, Pitcher Denies Allegations

Clay Buchholz is off to a fantastic start this season. How’s he been rewarded? Well, he’s been named American League Pitcher of the Month for April, but he’s also facing some serious allegations up in Toronto. Broadcaster Dirk Hayhurst, who is also the author of The Bullpen Gospels, took to Twitter on Wednesday night, and he accused Buchholz of doctoring the baseball. Hayhurst...

Rapid React (5/2): Buchholz Dominant Again

Another day, another strong outing from Clay Buchholz. After shutting down Toronto to the tune of 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 8 K/3 BB, Buchholz’s season ERA now sits at an incredible 1.01. I realize that there is no way he sustains that ERA and regression is imminent, but the real question is what kind of regression are we looking at?If you look at Buchholz’s PITCHf/x data, you’ll see...

Ryan Dempster Stars as ‘Foreign National’ for Red Sox in Game Full of International Intrigue (Video)

The Red Sox beat the Blue Jays on Thursday night, but the game seemed to be the last thing on people’s minds as the two teams played. Instead, the drama unfolding seemed to focus on the supposed cheating being done by the Red Sox pitching staff, first Clay Buchholz and then Junichi Tazawa. That should continue to play out as the two divisional rivals battle for the rest of the...

Buchholz looks to continue early season form

The Red Sox have the best record in the Major Leagues on May 1st, a place in the standings that shocks all but the true Fenway Faithful. This hot start could be attributed to the hot start of Mike Napoli, or even the the resurgence the offense got when David Ortiz returned. But in reality Clay Buchholz is leading the way for the Boston Red Sox early this season. Buchholz is one of...

Not quite how they Drew it up

Fans have been calling for Red Sox SS Stephen Drew's head after roughly three games as the starter. After missing much of Spring Training and the opening games of the season with a concussion, Jose Iglesias won over the hearts of fans. The young SS had to take a backseat however, once Drew returned to reclaim his position. Many people (including myself) thought that Iglesias...

Jenny Dell Bobblehead Dolls to Be Distributed at July 1 Lowell Spinners Game (Photo)

What better way to honor a Red Sox reporter than to turn her into a bobblehead doll? That’s exactly what the Lowell Spinners are doing for NESN’s very own Jenny Dell, as the Single-A Red Sox affiliate will be passing out Dell bobbleheads to the first 1,000 fans at their July 1 game. Check out the figurine below. A preview of your @JennyDellNESN Bobble Head that the first 1...

Jack Morris Accuses Clay Buchholz of Loading the Ball

Blue Jays announcer and World Series MVP Jack Morris is accusing Clay Buchholz of throwing the spitball. Retired journeyman reliever and poor-man's CJ Nitkowski, Dirk Hayhurst echoed Morris' sentiments as well. For evidence Morris cites how Buchholz would touch his left forearm with his pitching hand before every pitch. Surely the only way Buchholz could defeat a then 10...

Red Sox-Blue Jays Live: Boston’s Offense Looks to Keep Rolling As Ryan Dempster Takes the Hill in Series Finale

8 a.m. ET: Ryan Dempster picked up his first win in a Red Sox uniform in his last start on Sunday. He’ll try to make it two in a row on Thursday. Dempster will take the bump for Boston, which finishes off its series in Toronto before traveling to Texas for the weekend. The Red Sox and Blue Jays have each taken a game in the series, so Thursday’s showdown will mark the rubber...

Durable Dempster delivering for Red Sox

photo Leon Halip/Getty Images Jan-Christian Sorensen Contributing Writer Durable hurler Ryan Dempster delivered again for the Red Sox Thursday night at Rogers Centre in Toronto, lifting Boston to a 3-1 victory — and the team’s league-leading 20th of the season. The 35-year-old tossed a six-inning, four-hit game on 100 pitches, striking out four and walking three to lower...

The Red Sox shortstop "problem"

Reflecting back, there’s a critical period in the Red Sox development which is largely under-remembered due to what happened in October, 2004. But it began in November, 1997 when the Sox actually traded for a young star – Pedro Martinez – as opposed to their typical coveting of used-to-be-stars approach. And it ended in July, 2004 when the new-era Sox traded away oft injured...

Mike Carp Makes Third Straight Start in Left Field As Red Sox Look to Continue Hot Streak in Toronto

If it’s not broken, why fix it? That seems to be the philosophy the Red Sox are employing at the moment, as they will trot out the same starting lineup and batting order for the third game in a row Tuesday night in Toronto. After appearing just twice in the team’s first 12 games, Mike Carp will make his third consecutive start in left field against the Blue Jays, the first time...

Juan Nieves: Ace whisperer

The Boston Red Sox arguably have the best 1-2 punch in baseball right now and it's the same two guys that were on the club last year. Same pitchers, different results and Juan Nieves is a big reason why. When ownership kicked the tiny demented monkey, Bobby V, off the Sox shoulders, the pitching staff instantly got better. Bringing back John Farrell immediately gave them a renewed...

David Ortiz Tweets Message to Former Teammate Hanley Ramirez, Who Just Returned From DL Stint (Photo)

Hanley Ramirez can only hope to replicate the production that David Ortiz has provided since returning from a stint on the disabled list. The Dodgers shortstop at least has Ortiz’s blessing, though. Ortiz sent out a tweet on Thursday afternoon wishing his “boy” the best of luck. Ramirez already returned with a bang — going deep in his first game on Tuesday and going 3-for...

Surprising Season Stats (Small Sample Size)

Red Sox pitchers have the highest K% and BB% in the American League. Neither statistic is particularly surprising, but the duality of the records is rare. Since 1990, it has happened twice, both by the Cubs:In their doomed 2003 season, the Cubs lead the NL with a 22.6% strikeout rate and 9.9% walk rate. They also lead both leagues with a 19.6% K% and 10.8% BB% in 2006.The year, the...
