This week in people getting fired over sports-related reasons, a Petaluma (Cal.) mom lost her job as an office manager to attend a West Regional tournament in San Bernardino which would help send her son's little league team to the Little League World Series.
Billie Anne Tomei was the mother who chose leaving her job at a CPA firm to cheer on her son (Cole Tomei) and husband (assistant coach Trevor Tomei) in San Bernardino.
Miss Tomei tried her best to keep her job but her boss wouldn't let her attend a moment of a lifetime:
Tomei had vacation time, but her boss was out of the office at the time and needed her to cover, according to the report.
“(My boss) wouldn’t let me take time off,” Tomei told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. “He told me, ‘If you go, write yourself your last check.’ So I wrote myself my last check.”
Thankfully for her, the Petaluma team made it all the way to Williamsport to represent California and played in the Little League World Series United States finals against the eventual USA champs from Goodlettsville, Tennessee.
