Matt Holliday hit a tiebreaking home run and Kyle Lohse won his eighth consecutive decision, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.
Holliday led off the sixth inning with his 24th homer, a drive to right field off A.J. Burnett that put St. Louis ahead for good at 3-2.
Lohse (13-2) pitched five innings before being lifted following a 34-minute rain delay in the top of the sixth. He allowed two runs and five hits while striking out three and walking none.
Lohse has not lost in 13 starts dating to June 15 and raised his career record against Pittsburgh to 9-2.
Burnett (15-5) gave up four runs, two earned, and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings with three strikeouts and one walk. He lost at home for just second time this season in 10 decisions and 13 starts.
Holliday, Allen Craig and Skip Schumaker all had two hits for the Cardinals as did Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez and Clint Barmes for Pittsburgh.

THE HITS KEEP COMING
During Tuesday's Pirates-Cardinals game, Pirates elft fielder Jose Tabata hit a single to right field in the second inning. Cardinals right fielder Carlos Beltran came up throwing, and fired a laser to Yadier Molina at home plate. Josh Harrison flew into Molina like a missile...but Molina held on to the ball. Harrison's collision with Molina was completely un-necessary, as...
CINCINNATI (AP) -- Matt Holliday had four hits and four RBIs, Adam Wainwright won his fifth consecutive start and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 on Sunday.
Allen Craig homered and drove in three runs as St. Louis handed the Reds just their second series loss in 13 sets since the All-Star break. The Cardinals have won five of six to move within six games of...
Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was absolutely crushed by Pirates base runner Josh Harrison on a close play at the plate Tuesday night. Harrison’s shoulder made solid contact with Molina’s head and sent his mask…and body…hurling. Was it dirty? Eh, that’s for you to decide.
Miraculously, though, Molina was able to hold on to the ball for the out – though he certainly paid...
There’s some strong indications that Shelby Miller could be called up by the Cards when the rosters expand on September 1st. ”Why should we care about some stunod with a 4.89 ERA in Triple-A? Hey, Grey, we care about stunods now?” That’s you talking to yourself just as a pretty girl walks by and thinks you’re crazy for talking to yourself. But you don’t care,...
Lance Berkman is thinking about retiring after the 2012 season. - (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
After being an integral part of the St. Louis Cardinals miracle World Series run in 2011, Lance Berkman's 2012 season has been beyond frustrating.
One season after looking revived and young again, Berkman has been injury riddled and snake-bit this season. The switch-hitting first...
The Pirates open a three-game series with St. Louis on Monday night at PNC Park. Right-hander A.J. Burnett toes the rubber for the Bucs. The Cards will counter with right-hander Kyle Lohse.
Catcher Yadier Molina was injured Tuesday night as St. Louis was spanked by Pittsburgh, 9-0.
Eight player moves affecting five different levels of play in the St. Louis Cardinals system were disclosed Tuesday.
Eight is the magic number of runs to score to win so far in this Reds-Cardinals series. St. Louis scored 8 and won the first game, and the Cincinnati Reds scored 8 yesterday to win the second of the three-game series.
Mike Leake started for the Reds against Jaime Garcia, in what looked like a wild mis-match in favor of the Cardinals. It didn’t turn out that way.
Man, oh man, oh man, they've really just gone and done it now, haven't they? Hasn't anyone told the Pittsburgh Pirates about what happens when Yadier Molina feels the slightest bit disrespected or even just SORT OF pissed off??? NO ONE??? Really? That seems unfair, but I'm not here to complain. Because if history has anything to say about it, ...
Things have changed in a major way in the seven days since the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates met in one of the season's most memorable games.
The Cardinals have been surging and the Pirates have been stumbling since they played a 19-inning thriller, and the final 2012 series between these NL Central rivals and wild-card contenders begins Monday night at PNC Park...
