On an afternoon where the sun was blazing a scorching 106 degrees, it was a wily veteran on the hill for the St. Louis Cardinals who used everything but blazing fastballs to beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 at Busch Stadium.
Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse pitched seven strong innings to pick up his ninth win of the season.
Lohse allowed the Marlins to jump out to an early lead, allowing a two run homerun to Justin Ruggiano in the second inning. But from there forward, Lohse shut down the Marlins, giving his offense a chance to chip away at Marlins starter Carlos Zambrano.
Lohse allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out four in the midst of a brutally hot day in St. Louis.
While Lohse kept the Marlins at bay most of the afternoon, the Cardinals bats did just enough to squeek out a victory.
