The Baby Birds went 3-3 on Sunday as Memphis, Springfield, and Johnson City were winners. Johnson City has started the season 4-0 with their overtime win on Sunday. The big story was Carlos Martinez (pictured) who only allowed 3 hits and struck out 8 over 7 and 2/3 innings. Martinez appears to be fully stretched out throwing over 100 pitches for the first time this season. I believe if another major league starter goes down, Martinez will be the guy. The other big news was that Carlos Martinez aggravated his ankle. Taveras, who missed about a month due to that ankle, was removed in the fourth inning after scoring on Brock Peterson‘s 18th home run in the bottom of the third. Hopefully it is not that serious and he only misses a day or two. Newly promoted Stephen Piscotty hit his first Double-A home run in his second game for Springfield, while Tommy Pham had a hit in his second game for Memphis. The Cardinals put Maikel Cleto on waivers on Sunday and he was picked up by the Royals and sent to Triple-A. Tyler Lyons will take over for Cleto in the rotation and it is believed that Deryk Hooker will get promoted to Memphis on Monday. Cardinals' prospect Oscar Taveras may have re-injured his ankle

In last night's Memphis Redbirds game, Oscar Taveras doubled, scored, and drove in three runs.  However, he had to leave the game with what appeared to be an ankle injury.  Remember, Taveras spent a good chunk of time on the DL this season with an injury to the same ankle. Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch watched the situation unfold. Tonite was Taveras'...

A look at the St. Louis Cardinals who should make the All-Star Game.

(Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images) The Major League Baseball All-Star game is approaching and it is time to look at who should be on the roster.  With the best record and the best run differential in baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals figure to be well represented at the midsummer classic.  This is an analysis of which Cardinal position players should make the team, with a look at the...

Adam Wainwright Having Career Year, Possibly Historic

Start naming the best pitchers of the 2013 season and it doesn’t take long to get to Adam Wainwright’s name. In fact there are very few names above him on that list. Wainwright is not only having a career year, he is having a historical year in some sense. Taking a look at the numbers he is having the best year of his career. Up until now 2010 was his best year when he was 20...

McNeal: Wainwright-Matheny spat is perfectly OK

ST. LOUIS -- Maybe the two-hour and 59-minute weather delay had fouled their mood. Maybe all the delays over the past few weeks -- 15 hours and 22 minutes worth -- had worn out their patience. Or maybe being swept for the first time all season brought out their unpleasant side. Whatever the reason, Adam Wainwright was visibly steamed and Mike Matheny was clearly bothered after the...

Cardinals option Lyons, recall Blazek

The St. Louis Cardinals have optioned struggling lefty Tyler Lyons, who lasted just 1 2-3 innings on Friday, to Triple-A Memphis. Right-hander Michael Blazek, a 35th round draft pick in 2007, was recalled Saturday to add bullpen depth and the Cardinals could give Lyons' spot in the rotation to Joe Kelly. The 24-year-old Blazek made it to the majors for the first time earlier...

Matheny on Molina's rising stardom: 'What's taken so long?'

ST. LOUIS -- As the national profile of Yadier Molina climbs into the superstar stratosphere, manager Mike Matheny has a reaction that many Cardinals fans can relate to. "What's taken so long," Matheny asks. Matheny, of course, has long extolled the virtues of the 29-year-old catcher. The skipper sees Molina handle the Cardinals' pitching staff like a coach....

For heavy-hitting Matt Adams, AL tour may mean more swings

ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals fans who've gone giddy over the booming, left-handed swing Matt Adams uses to send baseballs to faraway places surely saw this coming. This soon-to-be road trip might as well be called the "Big City" Tour. Just don't expect the 6-foot-3, 260-pound slugger to sound as eager as his fans. That wouldn't really fit his style. "I don...

Adam Wainwright loses his cool

ST. LOUIS (AP) Adam Wainwright lost the lead in the seventh, and then he lost his temper. The St. Louis Cardinals ace strenuously objected to being pulled before Ian Kinsler's go-ahead hit that helped the Texas Rangers complete a soggy three-game interleague sweep with a 2-1 victory Sunday night. Hearing manager Mike Matheny's assessment that he'd been "laboring...

Former Cardinals pitcher Maikel Cleto claimed by Royals

The Kansas City Royals claimed Maikel Cleto off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. The right-handed pitcher will be assigned to the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Royals' Triple-A affiliate. Cleto was 2-3 with a 6.92 ERA in 16 appearances -- including nine starts -- for the Memphis Redbirds. He pitched in one game for the Cardinals earlier this season, pitching 2 13...

Can Yadier Molina win the batting crown in 2013?

It would be hard to overstate the value of Yadier Molina’s contributions to the Cardinals so far in 2013. His ability to manage the pitching staff is well publicized. His canon of an arm is well known to virtually every big league runner. The way he frames pitches behind the plate gets his pitchers the call, even when the pitch is questionable. Since Albert Pujols left for Anaheim...

Rangers Retribution

The Cardinals are 12-11 in June  And are 1 game up on the Pirates for the NL Central lead (2.5 on the Reds).  A lost weekend in St. Louis was  capped off by a 3 hour rain delay that pushed the Sunday night showcase into a Monday Morning meltdown. Swept out of town and looking closer to the pre-season predictions than the powerhouse that April and May spawned...

Cleto lost via waivers – expect more of the same

On Sunday, the Kansas City Royals announced they have claimed right-handed pitcher Maikel Cleto off outright waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals and optioned him to Triple-A Omaha. Though just 24 years of age, the Dominican native has been in the organization for almost 2 ½ seasons, all on the 40-man roster. Cleto had been placed there by Seattle prior to trading him to St. Louis...

Cardinals-Astros Preview

After struggling in his first game back from the disabled list, the St. Louis Cardinals' Jake Westbrook returned to his dominant form last time out. The Cardinals could use another strong outing from the right-hander after getting swept over the weekend, and he'll try to provide that in the club's first interleague matchup with the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. Westbrook...

Oscar Taveras aggravates ankle, is placed on the DL

On Tuesday the Cardinals placed Memphis Redbirds’ slugger and top prospect Oscar Taveras on the 7-day disabled list, a move that was a surprise to no one. Taveras was removed from the Redbirds’ game on June 23rd after trying to get back to second base on a pick off attempt. Taveras would later score on a home run, but his limp became worse. This will be Taveras’ second stint...
