Tonight at 7:05 p.m., Bartolo Colon (11-2 , 2.79 ERA) takes the mound for the A’s, as the club hosts the Chicago Cubs for just the second time ever in Oakland. After the game, fans will be invited to sit on the outfield grass for the first of four fireworks nights at the O.co Coliseum in 2013.
Colon was 5-0 with a 1.75 ERA in June, and has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month. It was also the best month for any A’s starter of recent memory, as the right-hander becomes the team’s first pitcher sine Gio Gonzalez in 2006 to rip off five wins in a single month.
The A’s are 13-3 in Colon’s starts in 2013, and the native of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic is one of just two A’s starting pitchers since 1991 to tally 11 wins before the All-Star break. His 11 wins also gives him one more than his season total from a year ago.
The 16-year veteran is currently riding an eight-start winning streak, and over that stretch he has recorded a 1.37 ERA and served up just one home run....
