For many White Sox fans, the six games a year that we play the Cubs are some of the most important games in the season. Very few rivalries are as heated and the winners get bragging rights for a whole year. Because of this, it was extremely relieving to see the good guys take the first contest 3-2.

Philip Humber was on the mound looking for his first win since his perfect game. Even though he wasn’t able to secure the win, he had a quality start, giving up two runs over 6 1/3 innings. Paul Konerko gave the Sox a first-inning lead by blasting a two-run homer off Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija. The Cubs answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame.

A reminder of the fireworks in 2006

The game soon turned interesting as these crosstown matches tend to be. The next time Konerko was up to bat, he was hit in the face by a pitch from Samardzija. Even though Humber missed his retaliation pitch against Bryan LaHair, both benches were warned against any further shenanigans. Later on in the game, Cubs manager Dale Sveum was ejected after arguing a tag put on by Gordon Beckham at second base. Even though Robin Ventura remained calm, I’m sure that if Ozzie Guillen were still managing, he would have found a reason to be thrown out as well.

The Cubs tied the game with an RBI single off of Samardzija in the seventh. Luckily, Gordon Beckham was the hero of the game when he hit the go-ahead home run in the eighth. It was refreshing to see Beckham find his swing. He went 2-4 with two runs.

Addison Reed came in to close the game in the ninth and it was looking like another flawless appearance for the young pitcher. Unfortunately an error by Alex Rios with two outs gave the Cubs a man on second. Luckily, Reed bounced back and struck out the final batter to bring home the victory.

The importance of winning the first game cannot be understated, especially in these heated crosstown games. John Danks will take the mound tonight as the Sox attempt to clinch the series.
