O’s fans like to stare at Chris Davis’ home runs too (Photo: Associated Press) On Tuesday night in Boston, in an all-important game against the first-place Red Sox, Chris Davis belted home run #51 on the year, thus cementing himself as the Baltimore Orioles’ single-season HR leader. “Crush” passed former O’s OF Brady Anderson’s mark of 50 bombs (1996) to get to the top of the list. Coming into the 2013 season, no one thought Davis had this kind of power potential, even though he showed off his muscles throughout his stint in the minor leagues. He has single-handedly kept the Orioles in the playoff race at times, when the offense has struggled to do anything (except hit homers). Early on in 2013, after his implausibly hot April, some pundits believed Davis to be a real MVP candidate. Although that talk waned alongside his batting average, Davis has kept up the power all season, and now has something to forever remind people of the damage he has done. Time will tell if Davis has the skill to put these kinds of numbers again next season (and the season after), but right now you’d be hard-pressed to find an Orioles fan who cares. The fans’ minds are, like the players, solely on the rest of September, and hopefully a few months beyond. Very few people thought the Birds would still be in the race at this point (probably the same people who believed Davis was capable of this), but that has made the attempt all the more fun to watch. Baltimore has an extremely tough road ahead of them, but they are not dead in the water quite yet. With Texas seemingly unable to win and the AL Central teams in the race (KC and Cleveland) hopefully taking each other out, the O’s have a chance to slide back into the postseason if they can find success in their upcoming sets against Boston and Tampa Bay. If they can’t, it probably means that Buck’s boys will be watching the playoffs from home like the rest of us. Even if they fail, it’s been a wild ride. Let’s hope Crush’s bat has some Orioles magic left in it yet.
