Two-year Coastal Plain League alum Kevin Mattison (photo courtesy of MLBpressbox.com) made his major league debut with the Miami Marlins on Saturday, May 12.

Mattison, a 6-1, 195-pound outfielder from UNC Asheville, entered as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth during the Marlins 9-3 loss to the New York Mets. He grounded out to first base.

A member of the Wilson Tobs in 2005 and Edenton Steamers in 2007, he becomes the Coastal Plain League’s 51st alum to reach the majors, and the third alum in 2012. Furthermore, he is the eighth former Tobs player and fifth Steamers alum to do so.

Drafted by the Marlins in the 28th round of the 2008 MLB Draft, Mattison played in 70 games with Low-A Jamestown, where he batted .250 with 20 RBIs and 48 runs scored. He spent the 2009 season with Single-A Greensboro, racking up 47 RBIs and 61 runs on a .250 average. His 2010 season was split between Advanced-A Jupiter and Double-A Jacksonville before being promoted late that year to Triple-A New Orleans.

In 2011, Mattison was a prominent member of the Suns, batting a career-best .260 through 130 games. In that time, he had eight home runs, 49 RBIs, and scored 87 runs. He started the 2012 season with the Zephyrs and was batting .250 with 13 RBIs through 31 games before getting called up.

Mattison started 15-of-16 games for the Tobs in 2005. Batting .208, he had a double and a triple, while also notching an RBI and nine runs scored. He also drew 12 walks and was 4-for-5 in stolen base attempts.

During the 2007 summer, Mattison batted .273 with 11 homers, 29 RBIs and 47 runs scored for the Steamers. He was also 30-for-33 in stolen bases, and was selected as an outfielder on the National CPL All-Star team. In the All-Star Game, he went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to help the National squad win 9-3.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 930 alumni drafted and 51 alums – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut thus far.
