The Chicago Cubs have placed starting pitcher Justin Steele on the 15-day IL with a left forearm strain. The move is retroactive to June 1. In a corresponding move, catcher Miguel Amaya re-joins the ball club ahead of Saturday night's game against the San Diego Padres.
Steele, who left his start on May 31 after throwing three shutout innings against the Tampa Bay Rays, has been stellar this season. The young left-hander currently sports a 6-2 record with a 2.65 ERA and 58 strikeouts across 68 innings for the North Siders this season per Baseball Reference. While the initial diagnosis of the forearm strain was only minor, Steele is expected to miss at least a start or two now while recovering from the injury.
Catcher Miguel Amaya will rejoin the Cubs in Steele's roster spot. Amaya has appeared in six games with the big league club this season. The 24-year-old backstop slashed .231/.313/.231 with over 17 plate appearances during his first stint in the majors. He was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on May 10th following Yan Gomes returning from the 7-day IL.
