PHOENIX -- Without a lot of fanfare, Wade Miley has made his way into the top 10 in the National League in quality starts this season. He has 18, as many as Mat Latos and Madison Bumgarner and more than Jordan Zimmermann and Matt Cain.Miley was at it again Wednesday, giving up only two runs in seven innings, but he did not receive much help in the Diamondbacks' 5-1 loss to San Diego at Chase Field. He gave up hits to three of the first five batters he faced, enough for the Padres to score twice and avoid a three-game sweep."I thought I made some pretty good pitches in the first. They did a pretty good job of putting some balls in play and hitting some balls hard. That's the way it goes," Miley said.Willie Bloomquist, in his first game back from two months on the disabled list, provided most of the D-backs' offense with three singles. His inside-out line dive to right field drove in Eric Chavez with two outs in the sixth inning, but the D-backs could not push another run across and left 10 on base.Miley just needed a little more. He gave up only one hit in his final five innings and finished with five strikeouts and one walk, the kind of effort that has marked his last three months."After the first inning he made adjustments and started throwing his pitches better," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. Miley has been the D-backs' most consistent starter after Patrick Corbin, whose 21 quality starts are third in the NL, and he has been on a nice run since giving up seven runs in back-to-back outings in his lsat two starts of May, once against San Diego. His 9-9 record is not an accurate gauge. Miley has given up as many as four earned runs in only one of his 16 starts since May 31, and had been unbeaten in his previous six starts. Five were quality, but he did not get a decision in three despite giving up two, three and four runs. A failed save conversion cost him one victory.Since the start of June, Miley is 6-4 with a 2.66 ERA. Since the start of July, he is 5-2 with a 2.29 ERA. He credits teammate Cliff Pennington with a positive pep talk during a loss in Wrigley Field on May 31 for the turnaround."I just kept attacking them," Miley said. Starter Trevor Cahill was an emergency bullpen option Wednesday, but the D-backs did not have to go there after Miley gave them seven innings, and Cahill remained in line to make a Saturday start. Indians acquire Kubel from Diamondbacks

CLEVELAND -- The Indians found someone to boost their sagging offense. They now have to hope it's not too late. After scoring just three runs in three games while being swept in Atlanta, the Indians acquired outfielder Jason Kubel on Friday from Arizona to help their playoff push. Kubel, who hit 30 homers last season but has struggled in 2013, was designated for assignment this...

Indians acquire Kubel from Arizona

The Indians have acquired outfielder Jason Kubel from Arizona, adding a left-handed hitter for their playoff push. Kubel was designated for assignment this week by the Diamondbacks after he batted just .220 with five homers and 32 RBIs in 89 games. The 31-year-old, who hit 30 homers last season, had been reduced to mainly pinch-hitting duties. Kubel spent seven seasons in Minnesota...

D-backs shortstop makes crazy catch

The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated San Diego Padres by the score of 10-9 in the 10th inning at Chase Field on Tuesday night. It was a crazy game, and it's now even crazier to think the Padres would've ended up winning the game if Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius didn't make a Willie Mays-esque catch to prevent a run and end the seventh inning. In GIF form, thanks...

Martin Prado made an insanely impressive (and clutch) diving catch last night

Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado flashed this web gem in the ninth inning of last night’s game against the Padres. With the score tied 9-9 and the bases loaded with two outs, Prado lays out and robs a sure base hit (if it stayed fair) that would have likely scored at least two runs for San Diego. Instead, the Padres headed back to the dugout with nothing and the Diamondbacks...

D-backs win on another walk-off, pull within 5 of Reds

PHOENIX -- Aaron Hill lined a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Adam Eaton and give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 10-9 victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. With Hill at-bat and runners on second and third, the Padres employed a five-man infield. Hill lined a shot over the head of left fielder Yonder Alonzo for his eighth career game-ending...

Rumors: Diamondbacks 'getting close' to moving Jason Kubel; Indians 'strong possibility'

When Jason Kubel was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks, the Braves and Orioles showed early interest in trading for the struggling 31-year old. While those two teams showed early interest, it doesn't look like they are the favorites to land Kubel. The Diamondbacks are close to moving Jason Kubel, according to Nick Piecoro of Arizona Republic. Chris Cotillo of MLB...

Speed kills: D-backs like Campana, Eaton atop lineup

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks have wanted to put speed at the top of their order since they saw the impact Adam Eaton made in the final month of 2012. In the last week, they have doubled up to catch up.Deciding the best way to make a run at the playoffs is with more speed in the lineup, the D-backs have started left-handed hitters Tony Campana and Eaton in the top two spots in the...

Indians pick up Jason Kubel from Diamondbacks

getty images Jason Kubel is out of the desert. The outfielder was designated for assignment earlier this week and has now been traded to Cleveland. Diamondbacks trade Jason Kubel to Indians

The Arizona Diamondbacks have been shopping outfielder Jason Kubel for the last couple of days, and it was reported last night that they were nearing a deal involving the veteran. That trade was completed, sending Kubel to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for a minor leaguer and cash, according to Steve Gilbert of The Diamondbacks designated Kubel for assignment on...

Rumors: Braves, Orioles interested in Jason Kubel

When the Diamondbacks designated outfielder Jason Kubel for assignment, many speculated that he would draw interest. While Kubel has struggled this season, he would make for a quality bench guy for a contending team. Some contending teams have the same thought and are showing interest in the 31-year old. The Braves and Orioles have shown interest in outfielder Jason Kubel, according...

Cliff Pennington’s facial expressions as he ran the D-Backs out of the winning run made my day

Bottom of the ninth after entering the game as a pinch-runner is an awesome time to get thrown out at home hesitating three times on a blocked pitch.

Indians acquire Jason Kubel from Diamondbacks

Three weeks short weeks after Mark Reynolds was designated for assignment, Cleveland has found themselves another power bat. This time from the left side. A source confirmed late Thursday night the Indians have acquired outfielder Jason Kubel in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks for a minor league pitcher and cash. The deal is expected to be announced on Friday. Kubel...

Indians Trade for Jason Kubel

In another strange move in what has been a very much against the grain season as far as roster moves are concerned, the Cleveland Indians have traded a player to be named later to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Jason Kubel. Indians fans remember Kubel as a part time outfielder and DH for the Twins from 2004 through 2011. In 2012, Kubel had a stand out season (30 home runs and 90 RBI...

Diamondbacks shoot down former ace Kennedy, beat Padres 10-9

Really Tuesday night was a night like many others at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks came back from an early deficit and broke a late tie. The bullpen blew a save not once but twice. Arizona went to extra innings for the 20th time this season and won on a walkoff for the 11th time this time 10-9 on Aaron Hill’s single to left over a five-man infield in the 10th inning in front of...
