Every morning we recap the previous night’s games, news and notes so that you’re up-to-date on everything baseball. As always you can follow us on Twitter (@BaseballProf) and like us on Facebook to get updated, fantasy-relevant news, tidbits and analysis.

1. Albert Pujols (1-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI) finally hit his first home run! That’s great and all, but what I’m really worried about is the fact that he’s walking just 5.1 percent of the time. Like they said in that popular baseball movie, “If you improve your plate discipline, the hits will come.”

2. Speaking of Pujols hitting his first home run, here are some notable players still with 0 home runs: Yonder Alonso, Jeff Francoeur, Jimmy Rollins and Andrew McCutchen.

3. Go figure that when Ubaldo Jimenez faces the best offense in the league he throws seven shutout innings of two-hit ball. That being said, he didn’t fix his control issues, which is what’s gotten him in trouble all season.

4. Despite striking out 11 batters, Yu Darvish still lost to the vastly inferior Jimenez, but it looks like he’s in his comfort zone and should be treated as a top-20 pitcher in trade talks. Enjoy the production now, but when the heat starts up in Texas around the All-Star break it might be a good time to sell.

5. Mat Latos turned in his best outing of the season (6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 11 K/3 BB), but when it’s against the Pirates offense you have to take everything with a grain of salt. It’s still nice to see him reach his potential even if it’s just for one start.

6. I’m sure I wasn’t the only person shocked that Chris Sale was being moved back to the bullpen as the White Sox new closer, especially with the success he’s had as a starter so far. He immediately becomes a top-10 closer and you can feel safe to drop Hector Santiago, Matt Thornton and Addison Reed because the White Sox aren’t going to move Sale from the starting rotation to closer without a long leash.

7. Probably the worst news of the weekend was Cory Luebke‘s impending due via Tommy John surgery. It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but when you hear ligament damage in the elbow with fluid build up you can assume it’s safe to drop him unless you have a free DL spot. It’s a shame because he was one of the rising star pitchers in the National League.

8. Injuries claimed another player who was having a nice 2012 in Jayson Werth. He broke his wrist and will be out for six weeks, which means Bryce Harper is definitely here to stay and the Nationals need to get healthy quick. Speaking of Harper, say what you want about his cocky attitude, the kid (yes, kid) plays the game right. Always hustling and very enthusiastic. The Red Sox could really use a player with his attitude right about now.

9. Speaking of the team of which I choose to root for, the Red Sox struggles have reached a new low. Getting swept by the Orioles, culminated by a 17-inning loss in which your hitters couldn’t score one run off of Chris Davis and struck out not once, but twice. That’s just embarrassing and it would not surprise me, especially with this pitching staff, if the front office started making some big moves to allow some of the younger players get some playing time. I know I’m rooting for it.

10. In other closer news, Andrew Cashner was an absolute disaster yesterday (0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 K/2 BB) and it looks like the Padres are going to roll with a committee of closers. Fantasy owners love hearing those words. Luke Gregerson and Dale Thayer will also be in the mix.

11. With Heath Bell being demoted, Steve Cishek seems to be the next guy in line, but Edward Mujica is on deck and while Cishek is being rested Mujica will pick up the save opportunities. Cishek is still resting from when he threw 52 pitches on May 4 and could be ready to resume his duties as the new closer tonight.

12. Oh, and Jason Hammel shut down yet another potent offense on Saturday (6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 8 K/1 BB). Just in case you missed it!
