With 13 of Thursday’s 22 probable starters rated above average and four topping 20% above average, it looks like a good day for pitching. Here are some thoughts on Thursday’s matchups:
Dan Haren has one of the highest ratings we’ve seen this season in his home start against Kyle Kendrick and the Phillies. Atmospheric conditions give him a small boost.
Pittsburgh will toss Brandon Cumpton at Cincinnati, which rates just about league average. Cumpton has very good control and high ground ball rates, so he could surprise with a line 6 IP, 2 ER, 4 K — decent enough if you’re in a deep league.
I would bench Jose Quintana at Detroit unless you’re in a 16-team league or deeper.

These rankings account for atmospheric conditions with data provided by BaseballVMI.com.
While Park Factors account for the yearly average air density at a ballpark, they don’t account for game-by-game changes, which BaseballVMI.com tracks.
