Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish was one out away Tuesday night from throwing the second perfect game in franchise history. Darvish's dominance of the Houston Astros included a career-high 14 strikeouts. But his 111th pitch came off Astros shortstop Marwin Gonzalez's bat and one-hopped right back at Darvish. The 26-year-old pitcher tried to get his glove down in time but later admitted it "was impossible to catch." Darvish on last play: That was impossible to catch. Anthony Andro (@aandro) April 3, 2013 In case you missed it, this is how close Darvish came to throwing the 24th perfect game in Major League history. As you can imagine, Twitter was buzzing when Darvish took the mound for the ninth inning. And that buzz continued even after it was broken up. According to the MLB public relations department, there were 104,000 mentions of Darvish last night on Twitter and those tweets reached 203 million people. Troy Aikman (@TroyAikman) April 3, 2013 So did former Rangers managing general partner and CEO Chuck Greenberg: Sure Astros are offensively challenged, but Yu was just plain filthy. Fully acclimated and ready for next level. Breakout year ahead. Chuck Greenberg (@chuckgreenberg) April 3, 2013 Darvish exited immediately after allowing his only hit, forced to settle for the consolation prize of getting the Rangers their first victory of the 2013 season. Darvish said he did't know he was tossing a perfect game until his teammates stopped talking to him in the dugout between innings. After being pulled by manager Ron Washington, Darvish tipped his hat to the Houston crowd and was greeted by his teammates at the steps of the Rangers dugout. "I think my teammates were more disappointed than I was," Darvish said. Follow Jon Machota on Twitter: @jonmachota

Darvish almost perfect in Rangers opener

Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish came within one out throwing a perfect game against the Astros. So we’re all of three days into the new season and it’s already been memorable, if nothing short of amazing. Yu almost had it

I knew I would miss tonight’s game because of social plans.  I figured it was no big deal.  Even though it was a Yu Darvish start, it was also his first start of the season.  First of many.  But I wonder if any will be as spectacular as this one. While I was with my friends, I monitored the score via At Bat and Twitter.  I was pretty excited when I saw Darvish had five strikeouts...
