Well, it wasn’t a no-hitter, but that’s where the positives ended for the Pirates’ offense…again. A.J. Burnett and the bullpen pitched a great game, which makes this all the more frustrating. The Pirates have allowed 10 runs this year, which is second-best in MLB. They a 1-4 record to show for it. That’s remarkable. Starling Marte led off the game with a hit on the first pitch, which was actually kind of funny considering the fact that I put the Bucs on “no-hitter alert.” Well, it would’ve been funnier if the Pirates had actually gone on to get some more hits and show any sort of pulse on offense. They didn’t. No other Pirate besides Marte got a hit all night. Marte picked up a second one later in the game on an infield single that he barely beat out. Neil Walker and Russell Martin each reached once via a walk (and Martin was promptly picked off). That was it.  Clayton Kershaw is really good, obviously, and the Pirates will start hitting better than this in the near future, but this is just absolutely miserable. Again, not much else to say. Burnett was solid for the second time in as many starts, but again had trouble going deep into the game. A quickly-escalating pitch count forced him out before he could finish the sixth. Part of that was due to his nine strikeouts, of course, and AJ did a wonderful job (mostly with his curveball) constantly getting whiffs. The Dodgers got one run off him via a single, steal (the stolen base issue is not looking much better for him so far this year), and another single in the third inning. With this offense as his run support, that one run turned in to a loss, which is obviously a shame. Jared Hughes, Mark Melancon, and Tony Watson all did solid work out of the bullpen–which has also looked strong so far this season. Too bad the entire unit has had just one lead to protect so far this year. Notes: The Bucs have now dropped eight in a row at Dodger Stadium. An 0-for-4 night for Andrew McCutchen dropped his average to .235…which still leads the team. The Bucs are the only team in baseball that has yet to hit a home run.
