Danny Knobler of CBSSports is reporting via Twitter that the Dodgers are "definitely interested" in a trade for Cubs' right-hander Ryan Dempster.

Knobler notes that the Dodgers were also interested in Dempster two years ago, but that the veteran right-hander didn't want to leave and the Cubs ultimately decided to keep him around. Of course, things could be different this time around, as he is due to hit free agency following the season. Of course a trade isn't without it's obstacles as Dempster has full no-trade rights as a 10-and-5 player, so he can call the shots much like Hiroki Kuroda did last summer with the Dodgers, he has already indicated that he would be willing to accept a deal in the right situation.

This is certainly interesting, but not surprising at all. I would expect Dempster to be the Dodgers top trade target right now, especially with Ted Lilly on the disabled list, and has still yet to resume throwing.

Dempster, 35, has started 11 games this year and owns a 2.31 ERA with 7.7 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 74 innings. He's also thrown for over 200 innings in the last four consecutive years. He'll earn $14MM this season before hitting free agency. If a trade is completed, the acquiring team won't be able to obtain draft pick compensation should Dempster sign elsewhere for the 2013 campaign, so that I'm sure will come into play when offers are thrown across the table.

My best guess is the Cubs are willing to eat some serious cash to get quality in return. That's where things will get tricky, because I can't foresee trading young pitching away for a 35-year-old veteran, ya know like the Dodgers did with James McDonald not too long ago. Sigh. Hopefully those days are behind now that McCourt isn't calling the shots anymore. No word on what the Cubs are looking for as the deadline approaches, but I doubt it's James Loney or Juan Uribe.
