ESPN Insider has a report that the Dodgers have joined the race for outfielder Seth Smith. Smith, 29, is a .275/.348/.485 career hitter in five seasons for the Rockies. He's hit at least 15 dingers in each of the last three seasons, so he can certainly provide some pop off the bench, because as of now that's the only fit I can see the Dodgers using him for. Of course concern number one on my part is he has been playing in Coors Field which has been proven to show the advantage it gives to hitters over the years.

Alright I know this rumor is a little odd, right? Typically you don't see rumors connected to a guy like Smith. This makes me wanna believe the rumor might have some validity. One thought could be the Dodgers are still trying to trade James Loney, then move Rivera over to first base, and then plant a platoon of sorts over in left field. Others might say this could mean the Dodgers are planning on trading Andre Ethier this winter. Honestly it could be both, neither, or this could just be a rumor with no credibility whatsoever. It's ESPN Insider, and I haven't seen the rumor anywhere else, so, well, tough to connect the dots here. The Braves have been more closely linked to Smith recently, and I suspect they are the ones that end up pulling off the trade.

More than likely the Dodgers are not involved. The Braves are talking Martin Prado for Smith and prospects. The Dodgers simply have no need for Smith that I can see right now. Tony Gwynn Jr. is a much better option in my opinion. Gwynn is an upgrade in every aspect except for the huge gap in the power department. I like Gwynn for the Dodgers bench as a pinch-runner, defensive replacement for Rivera, and giving rest as a fourth-outfielder. Just in general I like Gwynn, I don't know what it is about him. Bottom line, too many question marks on this one, just doesn't make sense, so I'm not buying it. But hey rumors are fun, and it's always interesting to see what comes from them. If Colletti is truly brewing up some trades it could definitely spice up what could be a very boring winter from here on out.
