Tonight, the Dodgers and the Padres play the rubber match of their opening series. One of the biggest headlines of the series so far has been Seth Smith’s torrid start. After hitting a pinch-hit homerun off of an injured Brian Wilson on Sunday evening, Smith went 2-3 with a home run and a walk last night. After his first five plate appearances, his hitting line is .750/.800/2.250. According to Fangraphs, he’s produced 3.3 runs of offensive value so far this season. He’s produced 28.8 for his career, so he’s boosted his career offensive value by 11% in the first two games of the season. Clayton Kershaw and Brian Wilson hurting, but don’t fret too much

Ouch, my teres major. (By: Dustin Nosler) The Dodgers are picking up where they left off last year — with the wins and the injuries. Are you worried yet? If you are, don’t be. The Dodgers placed Brian Wilson on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday with nerve irritation in his surgically repaired right elbow. Wilson infamously gave up three runs on Sunday night and failed to...

Los Angeles Dodgers living up to great expectations(?)

“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times…..” The oft-injured Matt Kemp is scheduled to return this weekend. It might create a logjam as well as controversy in the outfield. Although those iconic words by Charles Dickens debuted in 1859, they just might describe the Los Angeles Dodgers a scant five games into the 2014 season. The Dodgers have started the year the...

March In Review: Top Dodgers prospects, Matt Kemp’s 2014, Yasiel Puig’s projections

In March I was finally able to get going and I released my 2014 Prospect Rankings, wrote a little about Matt Kemp, and wrote extensively about Yasiel Puig. Besides game threads or game recaps, here’s what I was up to. ===== Things Looking Up For Matt Kemp, But Reality Will Require Patience It really is an unfortunate, delicate balance at the moment. And perhaps the worst part is...

Arsenal Analysis: Dodgers Worst Pitches Of 2013

Fans are always analyzing which pitchers have the best and worst pitches, but we normally base that on nothing but our own feelings in the moment, so I decided to take a more objective look at things. For a pitch to qualify for these rankings, I used a 200-pitch minimum for starters and a 50-pitch minimum for relievers. The metric used to measure pitch effectiveness is True Average...

Matt Kemp Excited To Return, Ready To Contribute

It’s been a long journey for Los Angeles Dodgers’ outfielder Matt Kemp since he was named the runner-up in the 2011 National League MVP race after hitting 39 home runs and stealing 40 bases. Since then, he has signed an eight-year, $160 million contract extension, suffered through two injury-plauged seasons and watched his team advance to the NLCS last season. Tomorrow, Kemp...

Dodgers Rumors: Los Angeles still discussing contract extension with Hanley Ramirez

Dodgers @ Padres April 1, 2014: You Probably Can’t See This Game

So! A lot is happening today. First, if you’d like to listen to me talk about the Dodgers for about half an hour with the esteemed Will Leitch, do check out his Sports on Earth podcast here. And if you’d like to see a review of the five instant replays that happened on the first day managers were allowed to, you can see a study I did with GIFs over at FanGraphs here. And, now...

Yasiel Puig Reminds Dodgers Why His Antics are Worth Putting Up With

Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig can be a real pain in the behind. His maturity was enough of a concern last season the team had him start the season in the minors because they hoped he could grow up a little. @cjzero/TwitterThat hasn't happened, but with a cannon of an arm and one of the most dangerous bats in the league his antics are something the team can put up with--especially...

Dan Haren sharp in debut as Dodgers cruise over Padres

The Dodgers followed their familiar formula to a tee on Wednesday night in their 5-1 victory over the Padres at Petco Park. Dan Haren in his Dodgers debut was in complete control, pitching six innings without a walk. He allowed four hits, and the one run he did allow was unearned thanks to a catcher's interference call on A.J. Ellis - on a ball that appeared to be fouled by...
