CHICAGO (AP) -- Darwin Barney had three RBIs and the Chicago Cubs used shortstop Jhonny Peralta's two throwing errors in the eighth inning to push across the winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. With two outs and two on, Tony Campana hit a grounder to Peralta, whose throw pulled Ramon Santiago off the bag at second. Starlin Castro then hit another grounder to Peralta and the veteran infielder threw wide of first, allowing Barney to scamper home. Carlos Marmol (1-2) got the last two outs of the eighth for the victory and Shawn Camp finished for his first save as the Cubs snapped a seven-game losing streak against Detroit in their first matchup since the Tigers swept a three-game series at Comerica Park from June 23-25, 2009. Barney had a run-scoring groundout and a clutch two-run double, helping the Cubs build a 3-0 lead hours after they fired hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo. Tigers weekly: Perez latest reminder of chaotic 2012

Hernan Perez might end up as one of the many players who finish their Tigers career with exactly one hit. For the forseeable future, he'll be there on the list with pitchers like Jeremy Bonderman, failed prospects like Kevin Hooper and late-career gambles like Vince Coleman. At the moment, though, Perez might best represent the chaos of the 2012 season. A few days ago, he...

Dye: Momentum needed for Tigers to turn corner

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland doesn't believe in momentum in baseball. He subscribes to the age-old theory that "momentum is the next day's starting pitcher." I disagree to a certain extent. There clearly is momentum in the Major Leagues. It's the only way to explain how bad teams go on extended winning streaks and good teams on extended losing streaks...

Tigers place Dotel on DL with elbow inflammation

The Detroit Tigers have put reliever Octavio Dotel on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow. The Tigers also recalled right-hander Luke Putkonen from Triple-A Toledo before opening a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. The DL stint for Dotel is retroactive to June 3. Dotel, who is 1-2 with a 4.42 ERA in 21 games this season, hasn...

The Detroit Tigers’ Disconcerting Start

The Detroit Tigers entered the season as the clear-cut favorites to win the AL Central, on the back of a $133 million payroll.  Ten days into June, the Tigers are four games below .500 and five games out of first place.  The book on the Tigers coming into the season was that their stellar offense would support a patch-work defense.  Fifty-nine games into the season, the pitching...

Cubs' declining OBP led to firing of Jaramillo

More than anything else, it was a difference in philosophy that led to the Cubs firing hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo on Tuesday. Cubs president Theo Epstein announced the firing and the promotion of minor league hitting coordinator James Rowson to the job of interim hitting coach before the Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 at Wrigley Field.. Jaramillo was hired in the fall of...

Tigers 8, Cubs 4

Jhonny Peralta had three hits and two RBIs one night after he made two costly throwing errors, and the Detroit Tigers rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 8-4 on Wednesday. Brennan Boesch had four hits, including a solo homer, and made a diving catch in right field as the Tigers improved to 8-1 in their last nine games against the Cubs. The one loss during that stretch occurred in the...

Tigers likely to add arms and not offense come the trade deadline

When the trade deadline rolls around mid summer for the Tigers, it’s likely that team president Dave Dombrowski opts for pitching help rather than offensive production. But that doesn’t mean the team won’t add run production in some way or another come the deadline. Buster Olney of ESPN.com tweets that Dombrowski at this point actually expects to get Victor Martinez back in...
