Dodgers could lose 2014 first-round draft pick due to heavy 2013 bonuses

With the new collective bargaining agreement, teams are much more creative in the MLB Draft than ever before. But since new CBA’s inception a couple years ago, no team has ever had to forfeit a draft pick due to overspending. The Dodgers are dangerously close to doing so. The team inked seventh-rounder Brandon Trinkwon this morning for slot, which prompted this post...

St. Louis Cardinals: How long can Carlos Beltran stay this hot?

The St. Louis Cardinals own baseball’s best record and look to be the most well-rounded team in all of MLB. The Cardinals can pitch with the best of them, have shown they are solid defensively and can piece together some timely hitting to manufacture runs. A big part of the Cardinals success this season has been the unexpected play of Carlos Beltran, who after Saturday’s two...

Cardinals at the All-Star Game: Who's in, who's out?

ST. LOUIS - With no fewer than 10 Cardinals ranked among the National League's top five in homers, runs, wins, ERA or other notable stats, the STL should be well represented at the All-Star Game July 16. All but one of the Cardinals' candidates would have to make the team to break the franchise record of eight All-Stars, set by the 1943 club that went 105-49 before losing...

Why the St. Louis Cardinals should stay patient with Oscar Taveras

Even for those who don’t follow the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system closely, the name Oscar Taveras is becoming well known. Of course, viewers of Fox Sports Midwest may know him better by his pseudonym “Minor League Guy (On Third)”. Shelby Miller leads NL Rookie of Year odds

Back in April, the folks at Bovada.lv provided a set of odds on a number of Major League Baseball-related races. Recently, they provided a refresh so I thought it would be interesting to compare and contrast then versus now. A new line has also been established. Because of Yasiel Puig-mania, the oddsmakers at Bovada.lv set lines on the National League Rookie of the Year race. A...

Welcome To The Bait Shop

Sometimes...  Sometimes, you're the chum.   The Cardinals sported baseball's best record heading into a three game set with the Marlins, who held the worst.    They promptly got served with 19 runs and two losses. Chances are your office mate is going to make the (obvious) observation that 'this was unexpected'. But before we devolve into a...

Today in Sports History – Curt Flood vs MLB

On this day in 1972, US Supreme Court, 5-3, confirmed lower court rulings in Curt Flood case, upholding baseball’s exemption from antitrust laws. In January of 1970, Curt Flood, an African-American outfielder with the St. Louis Cardinals, sued the MLB and its “reserve clause.” While the sport has its history of legal challenges, this was the first time a player of Flood’s...

Dodgers 5, Pirates 3

The Pirates fell to the Dodgers in a wild, wild game on Saturday afternoon, evening this weekend’s series. Brandon Cumpton immediately caught everyone’s attention with an incredible start to his big league debut. The righty isn’t known as a big strikeout guy, but he went right at the Dodgers and struck out all three batters in the first inning – then tacked on two more in...

Cardinal Draft Update

Not even 2 weeks after the draft began, the Cardinals have signed 10 of their first 11 picks and 17 of their 41 total. The only remaining bonus pool pick is Mason Katz from LSU; they can’t negotiate with him until the Tigers are eliminated from the College World Series. Katz is the type of player that many teams would want for under slot, and I’d expect he signs for less that...
