I would like to extend my deepest and more sincere thanks to Jim Tracy and the Colorado Rockies for sitting superstar shortstop Troy Tulowitzki last night…against a pitcher, Clayton Richard, who Tulo has absolutely owned throughout his career.

No really Rockies and Jim Tracy, thanks.

It’s not like the rest of my daily picks yesterday were dynamite and I was one solid day of production from a superstar shortstop away from finishing in the money. It’s not like that at all.

Except that it is. Exactly like that. Ass.

Well I feel better now. Nothing soothes a bad fantasy beat like extreme sarcasm.

The fact is that I share some blame too, and it’s a good lesson for anyone who has taken the step from free daily fantasy leagues to ponying up a few bucks here or there for the paid tournaments: check lineups as the evening nears.

I was at a work event so thus unable to do so yesterday, and it may not have mattered anyway if Tulo was a late scratch, but it’s a good lesson to keep in mind nonetheless.

A guy can’t produce for you in a one day situation if he’s getting the day off, so anything you can do to ensure that you are fielding a full lineup of guys is going to be a positive.

Today’s Tournaments

I was contemplating taking a day off today, but after how close I was to winning yesterday I’m hopping right back on the horse today on getaway day.

Join me in the following tournaments:

  • Freeroll Tournament w/ $50 prize pool
  • $2 Buy-In Tournament w/ $100 prize pool

You can browse all of Daily Joust’s contests here.

And if anyone wants to go head-to-head, let’s do it. Comment below, email me, or tweet me. We can do a free head-to-head round to start with if you just want to try it out.

Not onto the good stuff.

Today’s Fantasy Baseball Daily Picks Guys I Like

SP Ricky Nolasco

I am not a huge fan of any starting pitchers today. I don’t want to pay a premium for Felix Hernandez against Cleveland or C.J. Wilson against Oakland, so I’m going to drop down another rung or two and try to get some value from Nolasco and save money elsewhere. He’s off to a decent start this year (5 ER in 13IP and 8 Ks) and has pitched well against the Cubs in his career (35 Ks in 42 innings, 2.57 ERA, 1.07 WHIP).

I’ll readily admit this one makes me nervous though.

SP Edwin Jackson

Another guy to consider, but who costs more than Nolasco, is Edwin Jackson. He pitched a complete game two-hitter last time out, and the Nationals pitchers are owning the Astros this week.

1B Justin Morneau

Even as a White Sox fan, I’m ecstatic to see Justin Morneau starting to hit well. He’s hit three homers over the last two games in Yankee Stadium, and the lefty Morneau gets to face a struggling righty in Phil Hughes today. In six career ABs v Hughes, Morneau has two career HRs.

C Tyler Flowers

I’m going out on a HUGE limb with this one, but it’s a way to try to steal some value. Flowers is likely to start today as the White Sox play a day game after a night game on getaway day. Flowers crushed a home run his last time out, and Jason Hammel isn’t really scaring anyone on the hill today.

OF Ryan Braun

Braun has been on a bit of a cold streak lately, but he’s homered thrice off today’s starter Aaron Harang, who is striking people out but still giving up a 1.69 WHIP early in the season.

OF Josh Hamilton

Just keep starting him. He’s worth it.

SS Jhonny Peralta

The Tigers’ shortstop offers pretty decent value against Yu Darvish, who is putting a lot of guys on base.

Atlanta Braves

I am starting both Dan Uggla and Michael Bourn today against D’Backs starter Josh Collmenter…who is off to an awful start this year.

Guys I Don’t Like

1B Joey Votto

He’ll be expensive, but he’s not particularly hot (3 for last 14) and has a tough matchup against Adam Wainwright, who he hasn’t hit well in the past.

C A.J. Pierzynski

I know he’s red hot, but just be careful starting him. Robin Ventura has to get him a day off soon – he’s started all but two games so far – and today is the perfect day to do it.

OF Justin Upton

He continues to struggle with injuries, so he’ll have to sit on the bench until further notice.
