Adam Dunn is riding a stellar hot streak. (Photo credit) Update from last week: Matt Carpenter continues to be consistent and still plays every day. He is an on-base machine. Gerrit Cole pitched well in his first starts and sports an ERA of 3.75 with two wins. Hector Santiago disappointed against the lowly Astros, but still racks up strikeouts and should be owned in most leagues for that alone. Matt Moore continues to get shelled and might need to take a rest for a while. Jake Peavy is still out for a long time. Vernon Wells will continue to play every day with all the injuries to the Yankees, but still isn’t showing signs of turning things around. Dingers: Adam Dunn (1B/OF CWS) 67% owned in Yahoo! leagues – Dunn has been on a tear for the past two weeks. He’s batting .277 in June with six homers, 12 RBI and a .397 OBP. He is striking out less, taking more walks and hitting moon shots. Now is the time to ride the hot streak and pick him up in all leagues. He already has 40 RBI and 18 homers. Anthony Rendon (2B/3B WAS) 29% owned in Yahoo! leagues – Rendon is one of the top prospects in baseball and is now getting every day at bats with Danny Espinosa going on the DL. He has the tools to be a fantasy force and needs to be owned in all leagues. He is just starting to scratch the surface of his potential. Jason Castro (C HOU) 28% owned in Yahoo! – The former ninth overall draft pick is starting to prove people wrong about being a “bust.” He already has ten homers, 23 RBI and hitting .270. Since catcher is such a thin position, he is worth owning and starting in most formats right now. The Astros have an awful lineup, but he is playing almost every day. Stingers: Tom Wilhelmsen (RP SEA) 86% owned in Yahoo! – He is doing so badly that Oliver Perez has temporarily taken his job. He also has a 19.29 ERA in June. I would not drop him, but put him on the bench until he gets his closing job back. Perez and Carter Capps are not worth adding unless you are truly desperate for saves. It’s only a matter of time until he gets his job back. Jose Valverde (RP DET) 69% owned in Yahoo! – Valverde has looked like his terrible 2012 postseason self lately. Even Jim Leyland has to realize how shaky he is right now. He won’t lose the job yet, but if he continues to struggle, he might get released. If you own him, add Joaquin Benoit right away. He would be the first option to close if Valverde loses his job. He’s a ticking time bomb and it’s only a matter of time until Detroit realizes it. Kelly Johnson (2B/OF TB) 61% owned in Yahoo! – Yes, I realize I recommended him two weeks ago, but he has gone ice cold since then. He might also be losing at bats. The Rays have decided to call up their top prospect Wil Myers and that leaves Johnson platooning with Luke Scott. Matt Joyce and Myers will patrol the corner outfield spots and Johnson will split DH ABs with Scott. Add Myers immediately if he’s somehow available on the waiver wire. Johnson is also hitting .093 in June. DOH! By: Joe Kleiber Twitter: @Chibeman
