The Pirates are known for a couple of things: One, they have a horrible team each year. Two, they have a lovely business going, thanks to a low payroll and league-wide revenue sharing, which lets them make a profit even if fans don’t show up to the games that the Pirates aren’t investing in winning anyway. That’s what makes it especially endearing that the Pirates have managed to wrangle another $28,000 — and from fans who couldn’t have enjoyed their visit to PNC Park all that much, either. Rachel George, 21, and her father, Christopher, 50, need to come up with $28,000 in restitution to the Pirates after an altercation last year that led to a security guard losing part of his finger, according to WTAE Pittsburgh. As part of the ruling, both father and daughter have been banned from PNC Park for life, and both will serve two years of probation. Rachel George will also have 30 days of house arrest. The pair was on their first visit to PNC Park when Rachel George was told to stop smoking in her seat, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Tensions flared,” and Pirates security supervisor Joe Risher escorted Rachel George, Christopher George and another member of their party, Nick Miller, from the park. As they left, Rachel George jumped on Risher’s back, Miller ran off, and Risher was shoved against a fence, where part of his left middle finger was ripped off. “While defending himself, Mr. Risher got his left hand caught on the fence, and when he was pulled by both [defendants], his left middle finger was ripped off at the second knuckle and was hanging by a piece of skin,” Detective Frank Rende wrote in the police report, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Risher was “screaming in pain” and needed surgery to reattach the finger. Rachel George continued to cause trouble, cursing and spitting, and the two were taken to jail and had charges pressed against them. Miller was also charged but did not have to pay restitution, as it was determined that he was not involved in Risher’s injury. Those charges were resolved Tuesday, when Rachel George and Christopher George pleaded guilty to lesser charges and got what might be the most Pirates-y punishment ever — a free pass to never come back to watch the Pirates, and a chance to help bankroll the team. I could play for the worst team if they paid the most. … If the last place team offers $200 million and the first-place team offers $10, I’m going to go for the $200 million, no matter what team it was.” – Zack Greinke, explaining the basics of free agency Tweet of the Day Hey, Photoshop!
