USATSI Former Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge was one of the most polarizing athletes ever to wear a Detroit uniform over the last handful of years in Detroit.  Three years after being released by the Tigers nearly a year ago (last April 26), Inge signed with the Oakland A’s.  After that one-year deal ended, he signed a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates this past February. He’s currently on a rehab assignment with the Pirates’ AAA team, the Indianapolis Indians.  On Tuesday night, the Indians were in Toledo playing the Mud Hens.  During the game, a belligerent Mud Hens made it well-known what side of the polar ends he was on during and after Inge’s tenure in Detroit. According to the Toledo Blade, the fan had spent the better part of the evening heckling and throwing peanuts in the direction of Inge. Before the fifth inning began, the fan came to railing on the far side of the Indianapolis dugout and exchanged words with Inge. A number of Inge’s teammates came to his defense, with several attempting to jump the railing that separated them from the fan. The fan was escorted out of the ballpark but attempted to throw beer on the Indians before leaving. Inge’s teammates Jerry Sands and Felix Pie were both quick to jump to Inge’s defense and reportedly had to be restrained by teammates. “That stuff is unfortunate. You can’t avoid it,” Inge said. “There’s always going to be a couple idiots at every game. There’s nothing you can do about it. You can handle it the best you can, and I think we did.  Everything was handled very professionally.  The Mud Hens handled it professionally and I think we handled it as professionally as we could.” During the fracas with the idiot fan, Inge spent the time to hand out baseballs to more than a half-dozen young fans that were nearby. “I actually saw a couple kids sitting by themselves, I’m sure their parents were nearby, and I saw them actually get up and move a couple seats back. They were just like, ‘Wow, we need to move,’” he said. “I didn’t want them to feel like that. So I pulled them over and gave them some balls. It turned to be, I think, OK.” Atta boy, Brandon.  Some things never change – 1. There will always be idiots and 2. Brandon Inge still understands what being a professional athlete is all about.
