Found February 07, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
Jim Bowden had an article at ESPN talking about how the San Diego Padres should trade Chase Headley right now. In the article he listed the Pittsburgh Pirates as one of two teams with a moderate chance of landing Headley, noting that a package of Gregory Polanco and Alen Hanson could get the deal done. Bowden does a lot of these types of articles. He takes a player who isn’t necessarily on the market, then takes a group of teams who don’t necessarily have interest in the player, and creates a trade scenario for each team. The basis for the Headley article isn’t that San Diego is trading him, but that it would make sense to trade him. It’s not about what the Padres think they should do, but what one person thinks they should do. Really this isn’t any different from the type of trade suggestions you see on Twitter, comment sections, or message boards. It’s good for discussions, but don’t read it as an actual trade rumor. Gregory Polanco saw a boost to his power in 2012, and could have...

Pirates Make Jonathan Sanchez Signing Official

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made the Jonathan Sanchez signing official, per a team press release this morning. Sanchez comes in on a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training. No word yet on his salary if he were to make the major league team. The Spring Training tracker has been updated with the signing. There are now 19 non-roster invitees.

First Pitch: The Starting Pitching Depth

With yesterday’s news that the Pirates were adding Jonathan Sanchez, and today’s news that they’re still on track to sign Francisco Liriano, the starting pitching scene is getting crowded. Here is a breakdown of all the options who are either currently on the team, or in the case of Sanchez/Liriano, expected to sign. Guarantees for the Rotation Burnett threw over 200 innings...

Healthy again, Pirates' Walker is ready

Pirates second baseman Neil Walker suffered a dislocated finger and then injured his back. He was shut down in late September. Armed with a new one-year contract, Walker who batted .280 with 14 home runs and 69 RBI, told PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko that he is raring to go.

Roster Watch: Andrew McCutchen

There is no way Andrew McCutchen is going to make this team. He is a dastardly man.  A man with no regards for his opponents and a man who plays well outside the bounds of common decency. Just look at him!  He is setting up poor Carlos Lee for the Dudley Death Drop. GET THE…

Nationals Add Micah Owings Bat in MInor Deal

In one of the most interesting signings of the winter, the Washington Nationals have signed Micah Owings to a minor league contract, with an invitation to major league camp.  Owings missed most of 2012 with an elbow injury, but his projected comeback from that procedure is not what makes this deal different.  Despite sporting a lifetime won-lost record of 32-33, Owings is...

Daily Friar 2.7.13

There are some enticing pieces to share with you all today. Padres have claimed a new pitcher, who has some decent stuff (just not the greatest numbers). Also we have more news on which television companies will be carrying Padres games (spoiler alert: Time Warner is still out). Also we have a disgruntled fan taking to social media, some questions that need to be answered, and a...

FSSD Adds New On-Air Talent

Fox Sports San Diego has been busy lately and today is probably going to be the biggest splash.  FSSD has announced three new members of the team.  As part of the 78% of the county that doesn’t subscribe to Time Warner (because I’m not a Dodger lover), I enjoy the TV side of things.  That still doesn’t change my stance on bringing back Matt Vasgersian though (SANTA MARIA...

First Pitch: Why Advanced Stats Are Better Than Traditional Stats

If you’ve read this site for any amount of time, you’ve probably noticed that we use the WAR stat. A lot. The trade values series is based off WAR (although that wasn’t originally designed by us). We point out WAR when talking about the overall value of a player in a given season, or to compare two different players. We use WAR when estimating what a player will receive through...

Video of Micah Owings walking Jayson Werth with the bases loaded last April...

Death, taxes, and Mike Rizzo signing a player he drafted with the Diamondbacks to a minor league deal. This time, it's Micah Owings, who converted from pitcher to position player last season. Now Owings has an invitation to big league camp with the Nats. Just based on the video above, in which Owings walked Jayson Werth with the bases loaded in a game in San Diego last April...

Team Source Says Bourn Could Get $14-15M In Average Annual Salary

Here are two significant updates from Jim Bowden of ESPN XM Radio: “With Victorino getting an average annual salary of $13 million,” Bowden says. “And with Bourn turning down a qualifying offer of $13 million, it only makes sense that he would get north of that.” A team source (presumably the Mets) also told Bowden that if the Mets were able to sign Michael Bourn, negotiations...
