Former Tennessee Vols LHP Garrett Crochet delivered a performance for the ages on Tuesday night in the Bronx.

Crochet, who is in his first season with the Boston Red Sox, pitched 7.2 innings with 11 strikeouts while allowing just one earned run and four hits in a 3-1 win against the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series.

The former Vol was acquired by the Red Sox for big moments like that. And Crochet more than delivered in the biggest start of his career (to this point).

Crochet was confident that he was going to have a big game against the Yankees. He was so confident, in fact, that he told Red Sox manager Alex Cora the previous day that only one call would need to be made to the Boston bullpen on Tuesday night.

Cora told reporters after the game that Crochet told him the only call he'd have to make to the bullpen in game one would be to bring in closer Aroldis Chapman.

"For some reason, our front office was in the bullpen (on Monday) checking something over there," said Cora. "And [Crochet] was in the dugout with me. I told him we should call the bullpen. And he was like, 'Tomorrow, you're going to make one call to the bullpen'. I said, 'Maybe two [calls]'. And he's like, 'No, no, no -- one [call], it's going to be straight to Chappy (Chapman). And I was like, 'Ok, I'll take that'. And that's how it worked out."

Chapman pitched the final 1.1 innings of the game to close out the win for the Red Sox (though he loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th with no outs before securing the save).

As for Crochet, that was a legendary performance against the Yankees. And the fact that he delivered on his promise to his manager makes it an even more impressive outing.
