While it's been an up-and-down first half of the season for the Milwaukee Brewers, the Houston Astros have been spiraling steadily downward for the last several weeks. Having to face Yovani Gallardo doesn't look like it will help Houston. Gallardo seeks to win his eighth straight start against the Astros, who try to avoid a ninth consecutive loss overall in Friday night's series opener. The Brewers (38-44) arrive in Houston after losing the final two games of their series with Miami to finish their homestand 4-3 and drop eight games out of first place in the NL Central. "That's the way it's gone all year," outfielder Ryan Braun told the Brewers' official website after Thursday's 4-0 loss. "Two steps forward, three steps back. We'll continue to stay optimistic, continue to fight, continue to compete every day. We just haven't played good enough baseball to consistently win games." They seem to have a good chance of winning ...

Brewers 7, Astros 1

Norichika Aoki and Ryan Braun hit consecutive homers in the first inning and Rickie Weeks later hit a two-run shot, leading Yovani Gallardo and the Milwaukee Brewers over the slumping Houston Astros 7-1 on Friday night. The Astros lost their season-worst ninth game in a row. Gallardo (7-6) beat Houston for the eighth straight start, allowing one run and four hits in six innings...

Lack of hits, runs continue to plague Astros

HOUSTON This has become an open, festering sore, the type of severe wound that lingers well beyond any reasonable timetable for recovery. The Astros can't hit therefore they can't score. Reasons are myriad, some more rational than others, but the bottom line remains the same. With their losing streak having reached nine games, their deficiencies on the mound and defensively...

Brewers turn to Greinke to gather steam

By JEFF MEZYDLO, STATS Senior WriterA year ago, Zack Greinke struggled to consistently win on the road. That has not been the case during his second season with the Milwaukee Brewers. The subject of trade rumors, Greinke on Saturday tries to win a third straight road start and continue his dominance over a Houston Astros club trying to end a nine-game skid.Last season, Greinke (9...

Brewers sense start of momentum vs. Astros

This weekend's series is a perfect opportunity for the Milwaukee Brewers to take some much-needed momentum into the All-Star break. No team in Major League Baseball is playing as poorly as the Astros, losers of nine consecutive games, and the Brewers capitalized with a 7-1 win Friday night in Houston.Yovani Gallardo gave up only one run in six innings, and Milwaukee's bullpen...

Brewers still hopeful for Lucroy's quick return

Slowly, but surely, Jonathan Lucroy is easing back on the road to recovery. Milwaukee's standout catcher has been sidelined since late May with a fractured right hand, but it sounds as though Lucroy could return to legitimate action by month's end. "He's got clearance to swing the bat, and do some stuff in the cage," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said Saturday...

Orioles Looking to Trade for Zack Greinke

The Baltimore Orioles are a looking to acquire Zack Greinke from the Brewers reports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. Greinke is a free agent after this season, and the Brewers will likely move the 29 year old pitcher if they are unable to sign him to an extension before the July 31 deadline. Greinke is 9-2 on the season, with an 3.08 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 108 innings. The...

Astros snap losing streak against Brewers

HOUSTON (AP) -- Scott Moore homered for the second straight day and J.D. Martinez and Jose Altuve had three hits each as the Houston Astros took advantage of the first-inning ejection of Zack Greinke to get a 6-3 win over Milwaukee and break a season-long nine-game losing streak on Saturday. Greinke (9-3) entered the game looking for his 10th win; instead he was gone after four...

Game 82: Pirates 2 Astros 0

After a solid week of bashing the opponents' brains in with big hit after big hit, I've been hoping to see the Pirates' pitching staff slowly step back into the spotlight. It's not that I have any problems with how the Pirates have been playing lately -- I'm not one to quibble with results like this -- it's just that good teams tend to be balanced teams and...

Can The Bullpen Be Salvaged?

Photo: Tom Lynn/APThe Brewers’ 2012 bullpen has been a lot more like the 2010 version than the 2011 one, sadly.  Last year, especially after K-Rod was acquired, a win was a seemingly sure thing when the team reached the 7th or 8th inning with a lead.  This year, however, has brought all that stability crashing down and reminds me of how broken and jaded one can feel after a blown...
