Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer It was somewhat expected that the Boston Red Sox may have a sluggish game Monday following Sunday night/Monday morning’s extra-inning game with the Yankees. But to be held to two hits by Matt Moore was a little surprising. Because of that, the Tampa Bay Rays (59-41) are now a half-game out of first place in the AL East with the chance to take over the top spot with a win tonight. Once again, the two best teams in the American League do battle at Fenway Park in Game 2 of this series between the Sox and Rays. Boston (60-41) is the only team in baseball with 60 wins and has Jon Lester going on the hill. Lester was originally scheduled to start Sunday night, but was pushed back to today for the purpose of giving him a little more rest, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell. Lester mixed bag in the first part of the year, starting 6-0, but faltering over his final 11 starts before the All-Star Break, going 2-6 and raising his overall ERA from 2.72 ...

How Jon Lester got his groove back

Sorry about that headline. It implies that I have some idea how the de facto ace of the Red Sox returned to form. I don't. The fact is, Jon Lester finally was himself last night when he pitched six-and-a-third innings, gave up seven hits and held a very strong Tampa Bay Rays lineup to just two runs en route to a 6-2 Red Sox victory. The southpaw from Washington state struck...

Sox Get 'Lester-Iffic' Performance, Beat Rays, 6-2

(Jim Rogash/Getty Images)This was the Jon Lester we knew and loved at the start of the 2013 season. Throwing strikes, showing command, lasting into the seventh inning. Lester went 6 1/3 innings, giving up just two runs, striking out eight and—significantly—walking nobody in a 6-2 win by the Carmine Hose. A mixture of good and bad baserunning characterized the Boston offense....

Moore's first shutout lifts Rays past Red Sox

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Matt Moore wanted to smile when he reached the mound in the ninth inning Monday needing only three outs for the first shutout (or complete game of any sort) of his career. "It was a lot of fun," he said. But Moore resisted the urge to crack even the shyest of grins, as well as the urge to speed things up and sprint for the finish line...

Red Sox cool off streaking Rays

Extra rest helped Jon Lester slow down the Tampa Bay surge that nearly knocked Boston out of first place. After his start was pushed back two days, Lester matched his season high with eight strikeouts and overcame homers by Wil Myers and Evan Longoria as the Red Sox won 6-2 on Tuesday night and moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the Rays in the AL East. Jon Lester Takes Mound, Jacoby Ellsbury Given Night Off As Red Sox Try to Bounce Back Against Rays

One night after getting shut out in their series opener with the Rays, the Red Sox will have to bounce back — and slow Tampa Bay’s massive momentum — to stay atop the American League East on Tuesday night at Fenway Park. The Rays have won 18 of their last 20 games, including a dominating 3-0 win over the Sox on Monday night, and are just a 1/2 game back of Boston for the division...
