John Lackey Epitomizes Flawed Win-Loss Statistic, Should Be Red Sox’ No. 1 Option Down Home Stretch

John Lackey has the lowest ERA of any Red Sox starter. He has more quality starts than any of his rotation mates. His 1.17 WHIP is surpassed only by newcomer Jake Peavy. A fan of advanced metrics? Lackey’s 3.0 WAR is tops among all Boston pitchers. He also leads the team in losses. The veteran right-hander fell victim to yet another hard-luck defeat in Monday’s Labor Day matinee...

Miguel Cabrera sits again on Sunday against the Indians

Detroit Tigers' All-Star third baseman Miguel Cabrera was out of the lineup Sunday for a second straight day while recovering from an abdominal strain. As reported by Jason Beck of, Cabrera is still receiving treatment for an abdominal strain which made him leave games on back to back nights late last week, and kept him on the bench Saturday and Sunday.  Manager...

Miguel Cabrera sits Saturday night against the Indians

After being taken out of the previous two games due to aggravating an abdominal injury, the Tigers played it safe by sitting Miguel Cabrera on Saturday night against the Cleveland Indians. As reported by Jason Beck of,  Cabrera was in the clubhouse for pregame activities Saturday night, but did not participate in batting practice.  He remains day to day with abdominal...

Cabrera out of Tigers' lineup again

Miguel Cabrera, Max Scherzer Lead Teammates in Singing of ‘Sweet Caroline’ During Eighth Inning (Video)

Typically, the Fenway Faithful are responsible for belting out the words to “Sweet Caroline”  during the middle of the eighth inning, but a few members of the Detroit Tigers couldn’t help themselves from joining in on Monday afternoon. Holding a three-run lead against the Red Sox, the Tigers were feeling upbeat about their day, and they chose to commemorate the occasion with...

Jon Lester’s late-season revitalization has some flaws

I hate Jon Lester, I always have hated Jon Lester. You can go back through the archives of this blog and find all my anti-Jon Lester rants and raves. Part of that comes from the fan-base that widely overuses the word “ace” when it comes to baseball and calling Jon Lester an “ace” for a couple of years now. Jon Lester isn’t an “ace” and never has been an “ace”. Kershaw...

Boston Red Sox hope to continue home success against the Detroit Tigers.

The Boston Red Sox look to continue their great play as of late as they look for their eight win in their last nine games. After sweeping the American League Central last place team the Chicago Whitesox the Red Sox look to continue that against the Detroit Tigers. The big question is if reigning American League Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera will play in this series after resting...

Tigers-Red Sox Preview

The most productive offenses in baseball have lifted the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers to the AL's top records. The availability of the majors' best hitter for a showdown between the clubs remains uncertain. A banged-up Miguel Cabrera has sat out the last two days heading into Monday's opener of a three-game set at Fenway Park, where his Tigers have been awful...

Miggy puts WS ahead of Triple Crown

Should Detroit fans be worried? Mr. Triple Crown Miguel Cabrera sat out the past two games with an abdominal strain. Maybe, he'll play Monday at Boston. Maybe, he won't. Maybe, he'll just play a few innings, which is what he did Thursday and Friday in Cleveland before exiting early because of that nagging injury. What we do know is that the 2013 AL MVP indicated to...

Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino Both in Lineup for Red Sox Despite Injury Scares, While Miguel Cabrera Out for Tigers

Shane Victorino and Jacoby Ellsbury will be coming in with battle scars, but they’ll be playing Monday afternoon against Detroit as the Tigers and Red Sox kick off a battle of marquee American League teams. The Red Sox have the best record in the American League coming in, but the Tigers aren’t far behind. They’ll be playing without defending MVP Miguel Cabrera, though, as...

Game 2013.136: Twins at Tigers

Detroit Tigers: 79-56, 1st Place (7.5 ahead of Cleveland).  Really, it is the most remarkable thing: Cleveland just cannot beat Detroit. After cruising to a rain-shortened victory last night, Detroit improved to 14-3 against their division rivals. There is nothing like that at the top of any other division in baseball; I don’t know when the last time there has been. CLE 68 ...

Your Morning Dump...where Lester grabbed everyone's attention.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Miguel Cabrera is, as Jon Lester noted last night, the best hitter on the planet. So, when Cabrera came up to the plate with three Detroit Tigers on base and the visitors holding a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning...
