I don't know how to accurately describe the frustration that this game caused me watching it. The Pirates were very patient with Mat Latos in the first inning and drew three walks and were a nice Todd Frazier snag of a Casey McGehee line drive away from making breaking the inning open. Instead, they got nothing out of the first and never really threatened to score again all afternoon. The Pirates ended up striking out 11 times against Latos and six more times against the Reds' excellent bullpen. After the first inning in which they drew three walks, they only worked Latos for one more on the afternoon. Charlie Morton gave up two homers to bring the total against him this year to four, after allowing just six last year. Really, there was nothing good that happened in this game, unless you count Pedro Alvarez drawing two walks as good.

The Reds move on to the next town

After taking two of three from the Pirates, the Reds find themselves 2.5 games behind the Cardinals in the division and 1 game over .500. Mat Latos looked shaky from the start. After loading the bases in the first with two walks and a hit batter, he had to pitch his way out of the jam with 1 out in the inning. After that Latos caught fire and ended up with 11 strikeouts and no runs...

Reds occupy 12th spot in power rankings

ESPN released the latest edition of their weekly MLB Power Rankings on Monday and the Redlegs came in solid at no. 12. That's an improvement of five spots from last week's ranking (17th) -- only the Angels and Orioles made bigger jumps during that span (+6). The team's rise in the poll was undoubtedly aided on the strength of a 3-2 record, which included a...

Improved Pirates staff racking up strikeouts

There was a time in James McDonald's career - any point before a month ago actually - when the Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander would get two strikes on a batter and get cute. Rather than stay on the attack, McDonald tried to paint corners. It led to long at bats and short outings. In spring training, pitching coach Ray Searage decided it was time for a chat. ''I said...

Reds 5, Pirates 0

Mat Latos struck out a career-high 11 over six sharp innings to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Drew Stubbs had three hits, including a two-run homer, and scored three times for the Reds. Todd Frazier added his first home run of the season as Cincinnati continued its strong play in series finales. The Reds are 8-1 on getaway days...

Dingers and defense

The Pirates evened the series with the Reds thanks to some long balls and nifty work on defense – two things we haven’t seen a whole lot of from the Bucs so far this year. Neil Walker hit his first home run of the year on a Mike Leake meatball in the third inning. With Jose Tabata on second after a double with two outs, Neil pounded one well into the air that easily cleared...

Leake, Reds beaten by Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Mike Leake isn't sure whether he's starting to figure things out after a bumpy April left his confidence a bit shaken and his ERA too high. Still, there was a sense of relief after the Cincinnati Reds' right-hander put together his best performance of the season in a 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night. Though Leake's record fell...

Minor League Team Progress Report

Louisville Bats: 10-21 overall, 115 runs scored, 159 runs allowed. Louisville did not have a good week, going 1-6 over that time frame. The team is still struggling offensively with just two regular positions with an OPS over .800. Mike Costanzo is hitting .290/.353/.500 at third base and the catcher position that is being led by Corky Miller and his .298/.421/.447 line. Costanzo...

Game 28, 2012: Reds put it all together in 6-1 win over Brewers

[Box Score] [Cincinnati.com] [Mark Sheldon] [Redleg Nation] This was one of the most complete efforts on the year so far for the Reds. It probably starts with Bunny Arroyo’s fine outing on the mound. He somehow struck out nine Brewers, allowed only the mammoth home run to Ryan Braun and walked just one. He’s now 2-1 on the season with a 2.75 ERA. The Reds starters are getting...

Brewers drop opener in home series with Reds

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Jay Bruce hit a three-run home run and Bronson Arroyo pitched solidly into the seventh inning, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night. Bruce's ninth home run capped a five-run fourth inning off Marco Estrada (0-2). It extended his hitting streak to 10 games and Bruce is batting .405 (15 for 37) with six home...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds – Game 28

It seemed like the Pirates had more than six hits last night didn’t it?  Must have been the six walks. The biggest thing to take away from last night was yet another encouraging outing from James McDonald. If the Buccos want this series they will have to win two games in a row.  Something they [...]

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds – Game 27

Well that wasn’t much fun.  I get why Correia went seven, but he definitely wasn’t good.  I don’t know what he can do, but he needs to find a way to K more batters when he needs it.   First Pitch: 7:05 PM EST Where to Watch:  Root Sports, MLB.TV, FS-O   Mike Leake, RHP [...]
