Seattle Mariners 6 — New York Yankees 2

Andy Pettitte’s return was spoiled by the long ball in today’s 6-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

The beloved left-handed starter returned from retirement and made his first start of the season. A pair of two-run home runs by Justin Smoak and Casper Wells were the only damage Pettitte gave up over 6.1 innings of work. In the 9th inning with the bases loaded, left-handed reliever Clay Rapada got Casper Wells to hit a ground ball deflected of his glove that he also threw poorly to 1st base allowing an unearned run to come in and make the lead increase to 4.

The Yankees offense made Kevin Millwood look like he turned back the clock in 7 innings of baseball in which he allowed just 1 run. Walks proved to be the only way the Yankees could score. Robinson Cano and Russell Martin got the Yankees two runs in on bases-loaded walks. The Yankees hitting difficulties with runners in scoring position continued as they went 0 for 5. The Yankees 9th inning appeared to start on a strong note as Nick Swisher hit a double into left field but his efforts to advance to 3rd on the play got him thrown out at 3rd base, a poor decision on the part of the Yankees right fielder.

Win – Kevin Millwood (1-4)

Loss – Andy Pettitte (0-1)

*Casper Wells – 2 for 4, R, BB, 2-Run Home Run (1) in the 6th, 3 RBI (4)

*Justin Smoak – 2 for 4, R, 2-Run Home Run (4) in the 4th, 2 RBI (12)

*Eric Chavez – 2 for 4, R, 2B

*Mark Teixeira – 1 for 4, R

Current Yankees Record: 19-15
