Pirates (43-30) at Angels (33-40) 10:05 PM–Angel Stadium, Anaheim MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT Tonight the Bucs begin a series in Anaheim, as they take on the Angels for the first time in over half a decade. Much like their crosstown counterparts, the Angels have flopped for most of the season after yet another big offseason. They’ve got the fearsome trio of Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, and Josh Hamilton…except unfortunately for them, Hamilton has not been very productive and Pujols – while still solid – is no longer the dominant force he was in St. Louis. Their biggest problem, however, has been pitching – only the Astros have allowed more runs this season. That said, the Halos do seem to be heating up a little bit after a really miserable start, and they are certainly still very talented. It’s a west coast road trip, and those are never easy. This doesn’t set up to be a terribly difficult series, but it certainly won’t be an easy one either. Pregame news… Tony Sanchez is reportedly on his way to L.A. to join the team. The Pirates, of course, will be using the DH in this series and for the next two games in Seattle, so it makes sense to add a bat – and Sanchez has been hitting very well in Indianapolis. Since the Bucs carried an extra pitcher from Cincinnati to Los Angeles, it doesn’t look like Sanchez will be replacing Michael McKenry (yet), but it will be interesting to see what happens there when the Bucs return home next weekend. Tonight’s starters… Gerrit Cole (2-0, 3.75) vs. Jered Weaver (1-3, 4.41) Cole will be making his first road start after starting his MLB career with two wins at home (both against California teams, ironically). Gerrit has looked good but not great so far, getting away with using his fastball pretty much exclusively. He made an effort to mix in some breaking balls in his second outing but couldn’t locate them effectively – so look for him to try and improve in that area tonight. That will be the key for him getting strikeouts (he only has three in two starts so far). Cole’s first two starts were against former Cy Young winners. Weaver hasn’t won the award but has finished in the top five for the last three years. This year, though, he’s only made six starts due to injury and hasn’t really rounded in to form yet. Hopefully the Bucs can get to him and start to build some momentum on offense.
