The New York Mets (13-9) begin a three game series against the Houston Astros (8-14) tonight at 8:05 PM ET at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The game can be seen on SNY. Andres Torres has been activated for today’s game, and Zach Lutz has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. Torres, who started at centerfield and was the leadoff hitter on Opening Day, will push Kirk Nieuwenhuis over to left field and will start in center. He will bat seventh in the lineup. Starting Lineups:
Mets Monday lineup at Houston: Nieuwenhuis-LF, Tejada-SS, Murphy-2B, Wright-3B, Davis-1B, Baxter-RF, Torres-CF, Thole-C, Dickey-RHP — New York Mets (@Mets) April 30, 2012
Astros lineup vs Mets: CF Schafer, 2B Altuve, SS Lowrie, LF Buck, 1B Downs, RF Bogusevic, 3B Johnson, C Castro, Norris P — Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) April 30, 2012
Starting Pitchers: RHP R.A. Dickey (3-1, 4.44 ERA) will take the hill for the Mets tonight. Dickey will pitch in humidity with the roof open in Houston. Humidity is good for knuckleball pitchers. Dickey is 1-2 with a 3.82 ERA in 30 2/3 innings pitched against the Astros.     RHP Bud Norris (1-1, 5.84 ERA) will take the hill for the Astros tonight. Norris is 1-1 with a 4.85 ERA in 26 innings pitched against the Mets. Norris is 1-1 with a 7.13 ERA in 17 2/3 innings pitched in his last three starts of the season. David Wright is hitless against Norris, going 0-for-8 in his previous at-bats against him.   Game Notes:
  • Norris has struggled recently, so the Mets should definitely work the counts early on in the game. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a homerun or two from the Mets hitters tonight.
  • R.A. Dickey is facing a bad team in humid weather–a knuckle baller’s dream. I think Dickey’s going to have an incredible night.
  • I really hope Andres Torres gets on base today, and I think he will for some reason. If Davis can continue his good hitting from yesterday, the Mets’ lineup is in good shape.
Let’s Go Mets!

Andres Torres To Be Activated From DL On Monday

Outfielder Andres Torres was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run score on Saturday in what was his final rehab game for Buffalo. Torres will join the Mets in time for Monday’s game in Houston. Torres has been on the disabled list since April 6 after straining his right calf muscle. He hit .263 (5-19) with four runs scored, one double and one RBI with three stolen bases in five rehabilitation...

Andres Torres versus Kirk Nieuwenhuis

Well the Mets certainly had an interesting series in Denver this weekend. They got smoked in the first game losing 18-9, they were down twice in the second game but won 7-5, and today after blowing a 4-0 lead for Johan Santana, they won in extra innings 6-5 in spite of the bullpen’s worst efforts. As a typical series at Coors Field, the offense enjoyed the visit, and the pitching...

Home runs haunt R.A. Dickey in 2012

If you ask major league hitters what is the toughest pitch to hit, undoubtedly one of the top answers would be the knuckleball. Which makes the following stat a bit tough to believe: Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is the easiest pitcher in baseball right now for batters to hit a HR once they hit the ball in the air. Dickey has an MLB-worst 33.3 HR/FB rate. Except for his start in Atlanta...

Torres Back, Duda Out, Dickey and the Mets Lift-Off In Houston

Mets Notes The Mets have activated OF Andres Torres from the 15-day disabled list and optioned Zach Lutz back to Triple-A Buffalo. Lucas Duda is out of Monday’s lineup with a suspected case of the flu, the right fielder said. Mike Baxter instead is playing right field. The Mets are 13-9 as they enter the final day of April. Last year, New York was 11-16 in the month of...

Astros 4 - Mets 3

Virtual Kirk in center field where he belongs RA Dickey had a good start turn a little rough when the Stros took a 3-0 lead. The Mets chipped away and kept fighting. NY tied the game when "Captain" Kirk Nieuwenhuis with the sacks full set his phaser to clutch and ripped a ball to right field. Manny Acosta blew the game in the 8th, the Astros took the lead, and that...

Yee-Haw! Pre-Game: New York Mets (13-9) @ Houston Astros (8-14)

The root’nest toot’nest sheriff to ever don a Mets uniform, R.A. Dickey will take the ball tonight for the Mets as they open a 3-game series with the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.  The game tonight can be seen on SNY and heard on WFAN660AM.  First pitch is at 8:05 EST.  Follow @MetsWFAN @dailystache and @Meriwyn as well! I love the fact that the Mets are doing team bonding...

Mets Poised To Enter May In Impressive Fashion

The team's extra inning win last night allowed them to match their high water mark of the season, four games over .500. Winning five of their last six, the Mets now find themselves within one game of the division leading Nationals and Braves. At this point, most things are going well for the Metropolitans. Headed into Houston, a team which has posted only an 8-14 record to date...

Mets Drop One Late in Houston, 4-3

Tonight the Mets fell to a resilient Astros team 4-3, despite fighting back themselves from a 3-0 deficit.  Kirk Nieuwenhuis provided some heroics tonight for the Mets with a two-out, two-run, game tying single in the seventh inning before Jed Lowrie broke the tie for good with an RBI single in the eighth for the ‘Stros. R.A. Dickey was pretty good tonight, despite giving up...

Pre-Game: Game 23 - New York Mets @ Houston Astros

After a series win against the Rockies in Colorado, the Mets will travel to Houston to open a 3 game series with the Astros at Minute Maid Park.  The Mets are a surprising 13-9 on the young season and will look to improve that record against an Astros team that has struggled thus far in 2012.  The Astros come into the series at  8-14 on the year.  They have not had many problems...

Astros host Mets in three-game set starting tonight!

The New York Mets went 2-1 in this past weekend’s road set against the Colorado Rockies, while outscored by a combined margin of 28-22.  Terry Collins’ club continues its journey in a trio of matchups with the Houston Astros, who return home after seeing the OVER cash at 5-1 in their visits to Milwaukee and Cincinnati last week. SBR Forum is offering a great coverage on the...

Cyborg Up

It's easy to get enamored with the things that Kirk Nieuwenhuis can do. Sure, he let a fly ball drop in front of him in his first ever game in left field to accommodate the return of Andres Torres from injury. But it's not like he didn't let a fly ball drop near him while playing center. But Nieuwenhuis' bat is keeping the Mets in ballgames. His two-run single took...

Acosta’d! Astros 4, Mets 3

On a night where Brad Mills’ used 7 pitchers to face 7 batters in 1 inning, I don’t think anyone expected the pitchers’ duel he had through the 6th inning.  R.A. Dickey was once again brilliant, taking a no-hitter into said 6th inning.  That momentum would be taken away with one big swing, however, as Matt Downs hit a 2-run HR to put the Mets in a 3-0 hole with 3 innings...

N.Y. Mets Clowning Out West

Fans of the New York Metropolitans haven't had much to celebrate in recent seasons. Their last winning record was 89-73 in 2008, after Jerry Manuel took over for Willie Randolph midseason. Compared to the doom and gloom many predicted for the Mets, the start of this young season has been a pleasant surprise for fans from Flushing. The Mets are three games over .500, trailing...

Final Score: Mets 3 Astros 4

The New York Mets (13-10) were defeated tonight by the Houston Astros (9-14). The final score was 4-3. The New York Mets just simply didn’t score more runs than the Astros. I know that sounds very obvious, but it’s true. The Mets didn’t do anything too wrong, nor did they make any huge mistakes. The Mets just simply got beat in all aspects of the game. The Astros hit better...
