The San Francisco Giants made a bunch of decisions today regarding who will and won’t play on their professional baseball team. The roster moves that are especially interesting regard the Giants’ lineup.

Summary of lineup-related roster news:

  • Hector Sanchez made the opening day roster over Eli Whiteside and will backup Buster Posey at catcher, which should give Sanchez enough at bats to continue his development. This will limit the drop in offensive production on days Posey rests or plays first. Speaking of first…
  • Brandon Belt made the opening day roster and is likely to start at first base. (I swear! I even have a source! (See below.))
  • Brett Pill made the opening day roster and is not likely to start at first base.
  • Gregor Blanco made the opening day roster and is likely to have one of the coolest names on the team while running very fast.
  • Ryan Theriot and Emmanuel Burriss both made the opening day roster and promised to try not to play too much.

I agreed with those decisions! (The last one by default.)

Had I not already been sitting down I’d have just asked myself to sit down.

I had not expected to be pleased with the opening day roster, and certainly not with the way the roster was sure to be utilized. But here I am, ecstatic about the decisions Sabean, Bochy and co. made sensible, forward-thinking decisions.

And that scares the crap out of me.

It makes me ask, “Is there something wrong with me?” For the past few years this has been a team I’ve rooted for in spite of the organization. I’ve always cheered the players for busting their butts in the orange and black and I’ve booed the management for being dense-headed ageists that couldn’t build an average offense even if given a franchise third baseman, catcher and first baseman.

So either the Giants are starting to correct their flawed team-building philosophies or I’m experiencing a case of Stockholm Syndrome.

For now I’ll choose to believe that I haven’t been swayed by Sabean’s snow white beard or Bochy’s enchanting voice.

All of these good feelings center around the rumor that Belt will get the nod at first base to start the season. This is glorious news, and hopefully better the second time around. But knowing Bochy’s penchant for playing the “hot hand” and Aubrey Huff‘s need for crime scene investigators in the outfield, we shouldn’t be surprised when Belt is benched after his first 3-for-15 series.

But I will focus on the fact the Giants only kept four outfielders besides Aubrey Huff, presumably with every intention to keep Belt in the lineup and at first base. Presumably…

Always guarded, us Giants fans. That’s why we’re* so hesitant to commit.

It’s weird to be sure that your favorite team won’t play its best players. But that’s been the frustration Giants fans have had with the organization the past few years.

I want to commit to Belt. Hell, I was ready to commit to Nate Schierholtz to a certain extent but sadly he is the odd man out if Huff is pushed to the outfield. In a sport that offers few sure things, the Giants offer even less.

But right now they’re offering hope. And that’s all I can ask.
